  • 2022 - State of the Recruiting Class thread

    I started off last year's 2021 State of thread with a comparo of offers by ND vs some other program so I'll start with that again.

    ND = 29

    Mich = 108

    OSU = 32

    PSU = 119

    Northwestern = 7

    Wiscy = 21

    OU = 76

    UT = 42

    Clemson = 0

    FSU = 96

    Miami = 99

    UVa = 49

    Duke = 36

    USC = 91

    Stanford = 3

    ASU = 165

    Washington = 31

    Bama = 67

    Georgia = 82

    A&M = 90

    Vandy = 41

    I think they are way too slow on offers this year and because they aren't offering, they aren't getting write ups from the network sites which means reporters aren't contacting these kids and pumping up their egos about that special ND offer.

    So here's an updated but still WAY TOO EARLY 'best bet for ND' class projection.

    QB - Brady Allen - IN - But I'll take the field, '22 QB will come from NJ or OH.
    QB = Braden Davis - DE -------- I get a Kizer vibe here

    RB = Gavin Sawchuck - CO ---- Perfect fit for Lance Taylor
    RB = Emeka Megwa - TX ------- NOM's former teammate
    RB = Arlen Harris - MO --------- RKG and Rubio's teammate

    WR = Kaleb Brown - IL --------- He might be a RB - wherever he is = must get
    WR = Tyler Morris - IL ---------- He's going to ND or MI
    WR = Kaden Saunders - OH --- '22's Lo Styles
    WR = Reggie Fleurima - IL ----- Legacy w/ production
    WR = Ian Pugh - IL -------------- Wildcard w/ size

    TE = James Kyle - IL ------------ The next Kmet
    TE = Pat Caughey - NJ ---------- Tied here w/ Kevin Bauman's bro = Alex

    OT = Jacob Allen - NJ ----------- John Olmstead's LT at St Joe's
    OL = Joey Tanona - IN ---------- IN's best
    OG = Hunter Whitenack - IN --- IN's yuge-est.
    OL = Duece McGuire - IL -------- Coogan's teammate
    OL = Sully Weidman - MA ------- His name's Sully

    DE = Tyson Ford - MO ----------- Great fit
    DE = Wilfredo Aybar - CT -------- All the Catholics
    DT = Caden Curry - IN ----------- Best player in IN
    DT = Dani Dennis-Sutton - MD -- Got a feeling here, it's ND. MI or PSU.

    LB = Sebastian Cheeks - IL ------ Should be ND's top of the board LB
    LB = Devon Jackson - NE --------- Freak ATH - Watts teammate
    LB = Cyrus Moss - NV ------------- Fertitta's gonna land this
    LB = Braelon Allen - WI ----------- Had to list em, ND will finish #2

    S = Keon Sabb - NJ ---------------- He's interested in ND
    S = CJ Hicks - OH ------------------ Prolly OSU and a #2 finish
    CB = Isaac Thompson - MO ------ Thin early class for ND
    CB = Xavier Nwankpa - IA -------- Prolly a S but has the tools.
    DB = Bobby Taylor JR - TX ------- Bobby's kid, can't leave him off.

            It's stickin.

            2020 WR's:

            Johnny Wilson - .9495
            Elijah Badger - .9368
            LV Bunkley Shelton - .9309
            Chad Johnson Jr - .8917

            2020 RB's:

            Daniyel Ngata - .9468
            DeaMonte Trayanum - .9017

            It's hard to imagine ND getting a haul like that at WR/RB.

              No idea about academics but DMT is from Ohio and they pulled him out west.

                He was a 4.0 student from a Holy Cross school... wish ND wouldíve pursued harder. One of the best players Iíve ever watched play high school football.

                      No was too young to fully appreciate high school, Tyrell Sutton, too busy playing football behind the stands. But I was a fan of him at Northwestern.

                            Haha perfectly fine! Like I said, was too young to fully appreciate how great of a player he was in high school.

                              I'd just have our best recruiters go live in Illinois for a few weeks and tell em don't come back until it's done. It would be awesome to have any of these 4 guys in the class. I really hope Del is actually reaching out to these WR's cause it was super disappointing to hear that communication dropped off for them. ND's got a shot at 3 WR's in their backyard who are GOOD. I really hope they don't totally screw this up!

                                  ND apparently just isn't interested in Morris anymore, and I'm sure they'll slow play the shit out of Fleurima, considering how likely he would be to jump on the offer.

                                    Fleurima's gonna be in the class. He's gonna be a house + a skilled receiver who will end up Tommy Tremble size. Could be a James Onwualu WR-->LB type too.

                                    Dad was a 6-3/270 DT for Lou so he's got the genes.

                                    This is not what most Soph WR's look like:

                                    Plus, his Dad went to Evanston Twp same school as our next CB = Sebastian Cheeks.

                                    Sounds like the staff LOVES Kaleb Brown and will be in 100% on him until ESP/NSD This is non-negotiable BUT word out of Chicago is OSU will be the team to beat if they have him at the top of the board.

                                    The other word is they haven't been recruiting Tyler Morris for whatever reason.

                                    Other Chicagoland P5 prospects to know at this point:

                                    Deuce McGuire - OL - Marist
                                    Eign Pugh - WR - Fenwick
                                    Max Reese - WR - Fenwick
                                    Kaden Cobb - QB - Fenwick
                                    Jordan Anderson - RB/LB - Joliet Catholic
                                    Dontrell Jackson - QB - Marist
                                    James Kyle - TE - Loyola
                                    Saveon Brown - S/Rov - Thornwood
                                    Maurice Edwards - RB - Carmel Catholic
                                    Ryan Boersma - OL - Providence Catholic
                                    Jalil Martin - WR - Kenwood
                                    Lavar Lindsey - WR - Kenwood

                                    Downstate guys:
                                    Aidan Laughery - APB - Gibson City
                                    Hank Beatty - WR - Rochester
                                    Rashad Rochelle - QB - Springfield - will be a Slot or CB in college

                                          I would take that class in a heart beat as is if offered. Tyler Morris is CB'd to Mich by Loy, is there something new there?

                                          A little thin at DB, and I would prefer Wimsatt at QB, but all in all a well rounded and deep group. Would also give us our first batch of multiple 5*'s since the '13 class.

                                            Morris was CB'd to Michigan when it seemed like we weren't recruiting him. He's very much a priority now, and is probably an ND lean in all honesty.

                                                  This isn't the entire class. I have no idea where the DB class is at and there's not Bobby Taylor legacy in the class. Sorry... that is dying to go to ND like his Dad. Took an educated guess with with one each at CB & S. Gotta keep an eye on Nicco at Gorman and who he can send because they've got a lot of DB's.

                                                  Don't feel good about Little Bauman as far as being better at WDE vs someone else not named Wesolak. But you have to CB him.

                                                  Having to CB Bauman makes me want to leave Kerry off the list but he's tearing up the combines and we've got toddler pics of him geared up. If he really produces at Mater Dei hard to bet against him to ND.

                                                    Until Taylor commits somewhere else (like OU after his visit) I like this five better for fit.

                                                    I have no idea about running back yet.

                                                            Really think we should be looking at taking two QB's next year. With only 3 QB's on the roster, things can get critical real fast with a transfer or injury.

                                                            With Buckner being an EE, I'm guessing after spring practices we could see more offers going out once the coaches know exactly what were dealing with in terms of the position.

                                                              General consensus is ND has tons of momentum. Was a visitor for the UNC game, then spoke highly of ND.

                                                              Billy Schrauth - Mason Plummer with the FC on 12/1. Previously 3 FCs for ND included Singer and Farrell occurred in July/August, Wisconsin has 2 from January, April. Loy's CB on 7/29 was after the latest prediction for Wisconsin by their insider on 7/20.

                                                              Seems like a matter of time for ND

                                                              Jake Taylor - Singer FC yesterday, 12/3. Previous Blair Angulo CB 11/16.

                                                              Recent Offers by ND
                                                              #52 OA Comp, #5 OT Will Campbell, Louisiana, on 12/1 - heavy LSU lean

Some serious connections to ND. His head coach was Mickens HC, and he also played at Cincinnati, where Mickens played and coached. BK also with Cincinnati background.

                                                              Not to mention the current commit, Joey Tanona, #139 OA comp, #15 OT.

                                                              Options are good between Tanona, Schrauth and maybe Taylor at G. Rice, Chan, Wagner, and maybe Taylor at T. 3 Tackles would be a big get in this class, especially if it includes Rice.

                                                              Won't take all 7, of course, and Campbell seems like the least likely option. Of the other top 6, depending on which, ND looking solid for 4/5.

I like the guys a lot along with their commentary, but seldom check their separate rankings (like Riceís 3star, 88 grade, ESPN has him as #78 OA, 4star, #12 OT) or predictions. For those that care, in addition to Rice to ND on 12/1, Freeman predicted Schrauth to ND on 7/29 around when everyone else did.

                                                                                He puts the over/under on '23 commits by the end of July at 3.5. While also speculating that June is going to be a HUGE month for '22 recruiting.
                                                                                I read over/under 3.5 and thought "meh" before I realized you wrote for the '23 class. That's nuts.

                                                                                Funnier than you in 2012.

                                                                                  Right! It is a bold prediction article but he's mentioned expecting 3 commits in June/July before. If we combined the over/under estimates for both '22 and '23 classes, that's expecting 10+ commits between now and the end of July. Should be a fun summer.

                                                                                      Premium article from ISD about their expectations for commitments between now and Aug. 1st. They had put this out before but not with details as it relates to each prospect. Great read for those that have ISD, will definitely get the crootin juices flowing for this summer.

                                                                                      One interesting note that I'd make is apparently Stanford is now accepting OV's. Previously I had noted that Stanford wasn't going to host any OV's and that could help us with Merriweather and Moore. Turns out they changed that up and scheduled OV's with both of them. It doesn't sound like there is much concern inside the Gug but something to note.

                                                                                        Zach Rice #19 overall (overrated now that I've seen more)

                                                                                        CJ Williams #29 overall (Surprised he stayed there)

                                                                                        Jaylen Sneed move up 17 spots to #49 overall (I think that's about right)

                                                                                        Xavier Nwankpa moved up 49 spots to #35 overall

                                                                                        Tyson Ford moved down 21 spots to #91 overall

                                                                                        Anthony Lucas went from outside top 250 to #149 overall (I think that's too low but 247 is too high. I'd have both him and Ford in the 50-100 range)

                                                                                        Joey Tanona moved up 14 spots to #187

                                                                                        Aiden Gobaira moved from a 3 star to 4 star and #249 overall. (What a laughable update for him. Especially considering the below.)

                                                                                        Ernest Cooper moved from a 3 star to 4 star and #164 overall.

                                                                                          So, I thought I'd put together a general update on consensus timelines for all the OV's from last weekend. I'll say that while I do think the staff did a fantastic job with the weekend, I do think expectations for timelines might have been a little optimistic in some cases. Or, maybe misread to some degree.

                                                                                          Anthony Lucas. A long time, lol. He's got 3 more OV's to take and "several" unofficial visits before a decision. He's always kicked around the idea of announcing at an AA game and maybe that is where this is trending. Either way, this isn't getting done this summer. It'll be interesting to see if ND needs to get him back for an unofficial in the Fall. Good news, he'll have used all his OV's so we shouldn't be at a disadvantage there.

                                                                                          Tobias Merriweather. I think the staff was hopeful he and Lucas were closer to the end than the beginning and that doesn't seem to be the case. While it doesn't seem like Tobias is as set on taking this thing the distance, they are still considering Fall visits. He only has one other OV scheduled and that is to Stanford later this month. Bad news on this one is, he'll have 3 OV's left to schedule if he indeed takes this into the Fall.

                                                                                          Devin Moore. End of June or a couple weeks. He heads to Stanford next and then mentioned wanting to "lock in his spot". I think this is all very good for ND but I do think the staff was optimistic they'd be able to get him to shut it down before the Stanford OV. It may not matter in the end but you never know what's going to happen as more visits take place.

                                                                                          Benjamin Morrison. End of June. He has a Washington OV scheduled and then a decision after that. I think the staff was also optimistic they could get him in the boat now and cancel that OV. I don't think this ultimately changes those recruitments and it seem like the overwhelming trend amongst a lot of recruits is they are really enjoying being able to go on visits. And, want to make the most of them. But, I do think the staff had a goal and they weren't able to get that achieved in the very short term. It may not matter.

                                                                                          Dallan Hayden. End of June. Will visit OSU and then go into decision mode. All signs point to ND doing a very good job with him but did they do enough to overtake the Buckeyes with a Buckeye OV left to go? Consider me doubtful.

                                                                                          JR. Soon, maybe this week or his fathers bday, June 19th. Signed, sealed and delivered. ND did exactly what they needed to do. We should be getting good news.

                                                                                          Billy Schrauth. Soon, mabye this week. Cancelling his OSU OV. Will decided between Wiscy and ND. I'm with Crus in that I don't think this as close as 247 is making folks believe. We'll soon find out. Cancelling his OSU OV sounds to me like he gave a commitment to the staff and they said committed guys don't take visits. And, he said ok, lol.

                                                                                          Jake Pope. End of June or after his last OV's. He still has OV's to Bama and OSU to take. I think this is one where it went even better than expected. But, again, they aren't getting him to shut it down. At least not yet.

                                                                                          So, while overall I think the staff did a great job, I do believe they might have missed on their own expectations. We know that they wanted to get one or both of the DB's on board. And I think they were hopeful Lucas and Merriweather were closer to decisions. None of this has to matter but it certainly could for a couple different reasons.

                                                                                          1. If some of these guys stretch their recruitments out beyond previous expectations then ND might have to get them back on campus in an unofficial capacity.

                                                                                          2. They made some tough choices in narrowing the board at DB recently. Now they may have to make some tough choices on who to take. If Morrison isn't ready to decide by the time Nikai Martinez takes his visit, what do you do? This is just one example but if that happens with 3 or 4 guys then you have a problem. We'll see if it matters.
                                                                                          Last edited by Luckylucci; 06-14-2021, 04:10 PM.

                                                                                                  I aggregate info from sites that do the same from their sources (members of the staff, recruits, and recruits family/friends). When every reporter at ISD says Merriweather is a realistic short term option, that seems obvious. So, I say as much. On Friday, Loy called Morrison the best bet to commit this weekend. Singer says as much, again it's obvious.

                                                                                                  Expectations were very clear going in and they may have changed. Or maybe they didn't. Either way that's not an L on me. It's cute you think it is though.
