This was my thought exactly, nice little brag from Saban. I think the players certainly deserve this compensation but like many have pointed out, I'm a little uneasy about how boosters are going to take advantage of this, especially in the SEC. Going to be really interesting to see how this unfolds and how ND will be able to compete with the factories.
My two favorite football teams: Notre Dame, and whoever's playing Michigan.

The agents are involved now too. They are arranging packages for players through NIL to get their future business. Basically, the big boosters at ND need to tell Dante Moore or Julian Sayin, if you come to ND... on the day you sign, I buy 1000, signed 8x10's for "market value". That is determined by putting the 8x10's on an ebay store at a set price... say $250 and "purchasing" a few of them. I 100% know this is true because my buddy's kid works for one of the guys who you think of when you think shady sports agent. And he's now "in the business" setting up this system at the schools he's worked at where he knows willing donors.

We'll see how it shakes out. Will this tip the balance of power? Will it spread out the 5* talent / elite difference makers? Or will the schools who have been paying players all along be better at being legit?

I am curious what this will do in regard to the coaching ranks at that level. If player X is making a million dollars he could essentially pay for the coach himself and get a good one in.

College has always felt more “slimy” to me. Pro sports actually have contracts and agreements between players and ownership. Everyone is always wanting more, but things are typically on the up and up and mostly out in the open. College definitely attracts some shady, under the table shit.

                        Valid point.
I still think I would rather be deliberately ignorant of what is likely (certainly) going on in the shade.

This will drive division on a team. I’d hate to be a coach in this environment.

Just imagine if JFF was making money on the side while at A&M, Reggie Bush at USC, or Maurice Clarett at OSU. College football would have certainly ended after the coaches and non-paid players went on strike.

Dbo is worried about it simply becasue Clemson's national appeal is zero and their branding opportunities lie only in the 864 area code.

It's spreading... I've seen a few younger kids here in PA wearing Clemson gear. You'd never have seen that even 5 years ago.

                                            • I remember after ND games kids & hustlers waiting outside the stadium for the players to emerge and hopefully sign a few autographs. It was great to see the kids get their mini-helmets or balls signed but there were increasingly more “dealers” with an arm full of standard sized helmets and a stack of 8 x 10s pushing the kids out of the way in order to load up on product to sell in the secondary market.

I wonder how NIL can handle this in a positive way? Will the star players still be able to sign for kids while being able to profit off their NIL with the memorabilia dealers who want multiple items signed? Granted most of the players will never sniff the NFL so there’s really little monetary value you can put on their signature. But a Manti Te’o or Jaylon Smith or Zack Martin could’ve really cashed in when you think of all the freebies they signed.

Should be interesting to see what the outside of the stadium post game looks like this season in light of all that. It’d be cool if they designated an area for kids or limited it to one item per fan. They could always arrange a time for memorabilia hawkers to pay for the players to sign stuff.

I am not disagreeing, only contending that "slime is in the beholder's eye."

I've always felt that agents were the scum of the earth, bottom feeding parasites who used players like Handiwipes, then discarded them when dry, disrupting teams, locker rooms,et al.

There is the classic case of the Scumbag di tutti Scumbags Drew Rosenhaus, and his "timely" dismissal of Antonio Brown/

Brown's attitude toward women was the most toxic I have ever witnessed or heard of. HIs abuse was never physical, but emotional and pyshological to the point he should have been executed.

And Rosenhaus was eager to squeeze the last few shekels out of Brown's abilities. Principlies and Decency need not apply.

High school and college? I worked in Chicago in the heyday of Landon "Sonny" Cox, and the money he was getting from Nike for his King Jaguars.

But then the NCAA started letting NIKE and Underarmour host camps and all star games. Shoe companies, apparel companies..

The final straw for me was when a company that is SOLELY a sports agency was allowed to establish IMG academy.
I still can't get over that one..

The kids will make money, and the rude awakening will come when college fundraisers wake up and figure out that they money they were skimming off the skills of jocks is now going directly to the athletes, never to return to the college coffers again.

The other thing that fries my dough is the COMMIE nature of the NFL. It is downright socialist:

                                                You and I can't start a franchise
                                                Our payroll is capped
The draft is rigged to reward incompetence.
.The owners get to "approve" the other owners.

And they flap their gums about free market capitalism. Hah!

For me, the lesser evil is that players will start being able to earn what the market will pay them. And this will soon bleed over to the NFL.

                                                Change gonna come.

I know football brings in the most revenue for most colleges, but if these kids want to play professionally in the league then put the work in the college game to get to the professional level.

On the other hand, schools were making hundreds of millions of dollars off these kids during their 3-4 years and all of the risk was/is on the player. He get's hurt? No big deal to the NFL, there is always someone else. While the kids theoretically have the education to fall back on, we all know that isn't the case for many of the players. Doesn't mean that's right, but it's certainly the way it is. I think money has 100% changed the game for the worst, but the players getting their piece isn't the tipping point.

Just remember, while the 1984 Supreme Court case fundamentally changed the landscape, it was actually ND that brought TNT to the aging structure. The NBC deal was the straw that broke the CFA's back and sent schools to more secure conferences....Miami to the Big East, Penn State to Big 10, Arkansas and South Carolina to the SEC, etc. CBS then danced on the grave when they lost NFC games in the NFL to Fox in the early/mid 90's, which effectively forced them to search for weekend sports in the fall and landed on the SEC. I remember this stat pretty vividly.....in 2012, the rose bowl game rights were worth $80M to ESPN. The 1984 TV rights deals were worth $90M in inflation adjusted dollars.....so one game's TV rights were worth nearly one season!

I bid adieu to the NFL when they went to a 17th game even with all the injuries and concussions. PURE GREED, pure PANDERING.

Errant Rodgers narcissistic "Look at me, I;'m a smarmy Northern Californian" act merely validated the decision./

But, for now, I stay with college football. the ND OL? Three products? Whoa!! Pizza, Ribs,Wipes. They may blow Costco out of the water.
16 or 17 doesn't matter much to me. CBA caps games at 20 per year, so they just dropped a preseason game. IMO, you can blame the fans and the players along with the owners for the 17th game. Fans have been complaining for years about paying full price for an exhibition game when the starters barely play. Players were against it initially, but when their piece of the pie increased they appeared okay with it. Maybe the 17th game is the starting point for roster management where some players play half a game or sit out a game during the season?

As far as the NIL, I can see players telling those guys that chase autographs that they have to pay for the autographs. Most will probably cry and say it eats into their profits. Good idea to have one area strictly for kids, but I've heard a lot of these chasers pay kids to get items signed for them.

This probably opens up a bunch of loopholes around scholarship limits. The good news is it might mean we won't have to worry as much about staying in the 85 limit if we have a booster willing to pay tuition for someone to be taken off scholarship. If we're smart about it and find the right situation where financial aid can pay down a large percentage of the bill, it wouldn't even be asking for much.

I wasn't paying super close attention, but I watched the only episode that's out last night and I don't recall anything being said about Meyer or OSU at all. They were too busy making Zeke and Dak look like "Best Buds 4ever".
