  • holy cow dipping into this after reading some news.... first of all I didn't watch....

    That said.
    • CBS is left leaning like we all know. They share their polling with NTYs for goodness sake.
    • only 18% of viewers were GOP per CBS's own stats. If you assume CBS bias in polls, and take into account the lean in viewership % and apply it to GOPs (maybe never Trumpers) or independents it's not really surprising.
    • I watched some of the highlights. The call for unity. OMG LMFO. The avoidance of prime issues.................
    • If you post a CBS poll thinking the half the country that voted for Trump is somehow now liking Biden, holy cow. BTW, Trump is a buffoon. Still, you're missing something.
    • Talked to folks pre-evening. Folks were like, what is tonight. Doubt a lot of conservatives tuned in. INDs that tuned in were probably leaning....
    • I'm sure ratings were decent, but it's understandable given left leaners were thirsty. Very thirsty given Biden's approach.

But Tim Scott went up there in his "response" and talked about a bunch of things that either 1) weren't in the speech or 2) where Scott had to straight up lie. No different then when earlier this week GOP leaders made up the "BiDeN iS cOmInG fOr YoUr HaMbUrGeRs" story and the lie about the government buying copies of Kamala's book for illegal immigrants. Just a wild strategy. It seems like putting out a platform that says "this is where we can work with Biden" with specific policy initiatives so that HE has to be the one to say no would be a lot smarter than being obstructionist on popular policies while simultaneously trying to convince people that the other side is the one that doesn't want to work together.
Not sure what skews further left- this post or CBS. I’m willing to bet most conservatives watched Netflix or did something else. Getting lied to by a geezer about spending and my liberties not being absolute is not my idea of a good evening. I do wonder if Biden views the 13th Amendment as absolute? Perhaps candidates should have to put a yes or no next to amendments that they respect going forward?
Running the damn ball since 2017.

I wonder if the approval isn't as much about Biden's plans, but more about him being significantly more presidential in his actions than DJT?

Has nothing to do with what Biden said, but I had to laugh when I saw Harris and Pelosi jump to the feet like a couple of jack in the boxes. It was almost like they were hovering over their seats trying to beat the other in standing up.

It may be super cheap money, but the size of the debt will offset that. We are now looking at "trillion" like we used to look at "billions". Just go ahead and throw another trillion on there. Not much difference between 2 and 3 trillion, right?

YouGov is a reputable, non-partisn pollster that asked basic poll questions... and your response to getting results you don't like is to claim about CBS' liberal bias. What an echo chamber you must live in.

By the way the numbers breakdown was 54% Democrats watching the speech // being polled so while that juices approval numbers it does not strictly account for overwhelming support.

            • Millions / Billions / Trillions - it's just a couple zeros.

There are 11.5 days in 1 million seconds; there are 31.7 years in one billion seconds; there are 31,688 years in one trillion seconds. Yeah, it's a big deal.

Super Cheap Money - doesn't last forever. The 30 year treasury yield is 2.3%. It was 15.2% in 1981. Historically, it's in the 6% range. Realistically, our interest cost are likely to triple when rates go back to more traditional levels. Interest is currently 5.3% of the budget. If it triples, that becomes 16%. And if we get into 1981 inflation, we talking about 30% of the budget.

I think a lot of it is tone/message versus policy/substance, but many of the policy positions he's going for (i.e. universal pre-K, replacing lead pipes, everything about their handling of COVID, the stimulus plan they passed, the American Jobs Plan, the American Family Plan, etc.) all poll 60%+ approval. Taken together, here's how speech watchers viewed the policy plans:

When only 44% of watchers identified as Very Liberal or Somewhat Liberal those are good numbers.

I didn't watch the speech. These types of speeches are usually boring even when the speaker has charisma, of which Joe has none.

Seeing libs get Uncle Tom trending was not surprising.

The problem is there are more and more people receiving. Damn, free money is great. I was just in Memphis, try getting an Uber, it's near impossible. I asked one driver what's happening, he said "No one wants to work, it's easier to collect money."

Of course its popular, its free money without consequence. We know that life is full of consequences. Eventually, you can't spend what you don't have. Why did the Soviet Union implode? Bankruptcy essentially, it ran out of other peoples money. The US if very fortunate that it's still the World's Safe Currency. And no one is investing in China or Russia as Safe Currency. But if that ever changes, watch out.

Holy fuck YouGov is a B+ pollster with a +0.7 Dem lean. If you've got a specific complaint about their sampling or methodology lets hear it. Otherwise it's hard to take this seriously if the complaint boils down to "I don't like mainstream media."

I watched a series of videos on the concept of fiat money and the idea of having a monolpoy on your own currency measn that you can basically do whatever you want as long as all parties who use it agree to its value. Since that is the modus operandi of virtually all coutnries who accept US$ as the global fiat currency these types of concerns mean little to nothing politically anymore.

DOnt get me wrong... the moment the US$ isnt valued by the wrold anymore is goign to be a massive failure for us but until then....they will continue to print more money and all will be well.

Literally no one said the bolded. I'm not sure if there is a misunderstanding of how the SOTU typically polls or what kinds of conclusions should be drawn, but here's how I'd break it down.

YouGov bias is less than a point towards Democrats. Sampled group was 54% Dem, 44% Liberal. Largest group was self-identified moderates. Of course hardcore MAGA wasn't tuning in. If you don't think 85% approval of a speech where 40%+ of the watchers were Independent/Republican or Moderate/Conservative then there's a disconnect with how these speeches typically poll and how you're interpreting the data. For example, here is similar context from Trump's in 2019:

That speech had similar skewing, with proportionally more viewers identifying as Republican than do normally (+17 points, +72% proportional... Democrats were +74% proportional last night). Everyone knows and accepts that more people from the President's party will watch their speeches, and in context of other SOTU's 85% is a strong number.

Finally, saying "first of all I didn't watch" then talking about how he "avoided prime issues"... I dunno man. It all seemed quite on topic with issues most Americans categorize as most important to them. The only person last night who went off topic was Tim Scott who gave a rebuttal focused on critical race theory and other racism tropes that weren't even in Biden's speech. Why? Because these culture war planks are the only things Republicans can win on when they're intentionally being obstructionist on popular policy. Tim Scott wasn't about to get up there and be like "Biden said we're cutting child poverty in half and making drinking water safe by replacing lead pipes... I'm hear to tell you that the Republican party stands for keeping kids poor and your water full of heavy metals." That'd be suicidal.

Seems like the President's party is the one who watches and gives feedback.

Whether YouGov is good or not, I'll defer to 538. That stuff goes way over my head. But it's hard to put much stock in the results of a speech that clearly had a partisan audience.

Trump SOTU in 2019: per CBS 76% approval. CNN poll 59% "very positive" and 35% of Dems approving. Large majority of independent support. That's after 3 years of being a polarizing figure that many people loved or hated and he could still pull good SOTU numbers.

So I'm not sure Biden's great numbers really tell us much of anything. Guess we'll see how his policies affect people and their opinions.

Will be funny to see what they do with taxes. Thought I saw something that some of the House Dems would not vote for any tax plan that did not include getting rid of the SALT deduction cap. Not sure that is a winning message.

According to leaked audio revealedSunday by The New York Times, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said Kerry told him that Israel attacked Iranian assets in Syria “at least 200 times.” Zarif added that he was surprised that Kerry would reveal that sensitive information to him, according to the audio. Kerry denies doing it and the Biden administration says it's not a big deal, claiming the info was widely known.

Comical. The poll was not "stacked with leftists".

First of all, for every SOTU more watchers are from the President's party. For example, in the 2019 Trump SOTU viewership skewed +17 points Republican versus national average (or +72% proportional). Last night the Democrat skew was +74%. So it was typical viewership demographics for this type of address.

Second, the largest single group was moderates. Only 44% of watchers identified as "very liberal" or "somewhat liberal".

So you're basically just crying and complaining about a topic you know nothing about and embarrassing yourself.

This is why we need journalism and where our current gap of left-wing activists working for CBS, CNN, etc. are hurting the country. Pompeo said that while he was briefing Trump, John Kerry was briefing Tehran. It would need to be General Flynn doing this in order for someone to get to the bottom of it.

Someone is crying and embarrassing themself. If polling the Whole Foods parking lot gets you 85% and you feel good about it. Then feel good about it.

Kerry denies doing it and the Biden administration says it's not a big deal, claiming the info was widely known.

So apparently it is possible that 85% of the people watching approved because only a small amount of liberals were watching. That would carry forward to skewed polling because nobody cared outside of the left-lunging crowd. Maybe we're both right? No?

We already spent 1.9T for COVID relief, of which ~5% was directly related to fighting the pandemic. He wants 2.25T in infrastructure, of which <10% is actually infrastructure. He also wants another 1.8T in liberal wishlist items. That's 5.95 T of money we don't have and we don't get by taxing rich people more on capital gains. Our debt is higher than the annual GDP. You're right! This is moderate and I must be a Billy Bob. It's reckless and quite radical in reality.

I'm all for the military, but I can't imagine how many billions could be saved if we looked at the infamous $75 hammers and $1,000 toilets. Cut a chunk of foreign aid. We have obligations, but there's plenty of waste that goes into those programs. Etc., etc.

TV's, snap-on tools, you name it. September was a shopping month! The real fat in the military is the civilian workforce tied to it. Tons of them are just retired military who finish their careers in support roles. Many of them are pretty light in responsibilities and duties. I've seen it first hand. They could make some serious cuts there if they had the will.

That would carry forward to skewed polling because nobody cared outside of the left-lunging crowd. Maybe we're both right? No?

She has entertained the media and fallen into the trap. You can't lead a caucus when you are getting cut at the knees by the press. Instead of entertaining them on Trump, you say that you are going to do everything you can to oppose the Biden agenda of insane deficit spending, open borders, election fraud, DC statehood, court-packing, and more. It's not that hard. Mitch figured this out.

We have been hiring for 2 months. Typically we have about 30 appliacnts the first week. We have had 11 in 2 months. We have hired 3. One is really awful and would be asked to not come back under normal circumstances and we have another that came in for training 3 weeks ago but has not been able to commit to a schedule. In normla circumstances we would just move on. Today the ONLY staff scheduled called off. So guess what I am doing?
