  • Hitler got 5 years in jail in 1923 for the The Beer Hall Putsch. He got out after 9 months in the spirit of unity and moving forward.

It's been a while since I was in school, but my assumption is this was all fine and everything worked out?
It is no coincidence that the growth of modern tyrants has in every case been heralded by the growth of prejudice.

I have zero doubt she's packing and wouldn't go through the metal detetors for that reason. She put out a video that said she'd be carrying whenever she's in DC.

She filmed said video in an alley behind a townhouse that Dick Durbin and Chuck Schumer rented right around the corner from pubs and restaurants where congressional staffers hang out, which is surely a dangerous urban DC area.

          - Eric Gavelek Munchel, aka zip tie guy, had in addition to plastic restraints, an item in a holster on his right hip, and a cell phone mounted on his chest with the camera facing outward. He was carrying a black and yellow 'Taser Pulse' taser
          - Lonnie Coffman, of Alabama, was charged on Jan. 7, 2021, with possession of an unregistered firearm (destructive device) and carrying a pistol without a license. It is alleged that Coffman’s vehicle contained 11 explosive devices known as Molotov cocktails and firearms. It is further alleged he was in possession of two firearms.USCP Bomb Squad members subsequently searched the vehicle and secured one black handgun, one M4 Carbine assault rifle along with rifle magazines loaded with ammunition, and components for the construction of eleven “Molotov Cocktails” in the form of mason jars filled with ignitable substances, rags, and lighters. The mason jars contained melted Styrofoam and gasoline. ATF advised that the combination of melted Styrofoam and gasoline is an explosive mixture that has the effect of napalm because, when detonated, the substance causes the flammable liquid to better stick to objects that it hits.
          - Christopher Alberts, of Maryland, was charged on Jan. 7, 2021, with carrying or having readily accessible, on the grounds of the United States Capitol Building, a firearm and ammunition. Specifically a Taurus G2C, 9mm handgun and 9mm caliber ammunition

One of the charges is "Assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers or employees."
          - Dominic Box, Savannah, Ga, after his arrest disputes the fact that five people died as a result of what happened at the Capitol insurrection and that he entered the Capitol though he posted a video inside the Capitol. He's been fired from his job as a car salesman.
          - Richard Barnett, 60, of Gravette, Iowa, include a charge that he was carrying a stun gun when he broke into the Capitol. A charge against him was enhanced to entering a restricted building without lawful authority while carrying a dangerous weapon.

She led 100 members of Moore County Citizens for Freedom, which describes itself online as a nonpartisan network promoting conservative values, to the Washington rally to “stand against election fraud” and support Trump. A Defense official told CBS News the Army is investigating how many soldiers from Fort Bragg accompanied Rainey to Washington

A democratic rep found that all of the panic buttons had been removed from her office, with no explanation.

Jim Clyburn said that a group showed up at his unmarked office and went through everything, rather than going through his things in the office that had his name on it.

Another rep saw people giving guided tours the day before the riots, and thought it looked out of place.

A bunch of little things that can very easily be dismissed or explained... but all together, they do kind of make you go "hmmmmmm"

Did the police really "just let them in" and are the videos of police directing traffic of people/protesters to the Capitol really police? I am confused on those and admittedly have not ventured down that rabbit hole.

More than one-third of all active-duty troops and more than half of minority service members say they have personally witnessed examples of white nationalism or ideological-driven racism, according to a 2020 survey of active-duty Military Times readers.

I worry for Taylor Greene. I think she has mental problems.

Jason Crow asked a Capitol police officer for his weapon if he was aprehensive of using it himself. That dude saw real combat. He's not one of these tin soldier wannabees that likes to take selfies with guns.

Same. And I'm not much of the praying type.

In addition, I am calling the offices of my state and Federal reps daily to make sure they are denouncing this shit. My Federal reps are Dems. My state senator is a Republican and his office is telling me they're not on board with the copu. Republican state rep and his office is strangely silent. Checked his Twitter feed and I am beginning to understand why.

I don't know when Republicans became the party of grievance. They're always under attack from someone or something, always being persecuted.

Here is a great visual as an example:

MTG, my new favorite nutjob, literally SPEAKING into a microphone on the HOUSE FLOOR.

I have had friends and relatives tell me for the last ten years that Democrats are "taking away their freedoms." I have often, but not consistently, asked which Democrats are doing this and what freedoms are they taking?

I am met with crickets, something about taxation being theft or their guns. Kenya Barry never got their guns, right?

                                Meanwhile:

                                  • Good governance for the public good has devolved into the politics of airing grievances, reducing opposite views to stereotypes and obstructing solutions reached by the majority of legislators.

                                    Two Commencement speeches:
President Obama's Commencement Address at Notre Dame

                                    Excerpt:
Unfortunately, finding that common ground — recognizing that our fates are tied up, as Dr. King said, in a “single garment of destiny” — is not easy. And part of the problem, of course, lies in the imperfections of man — our selfishness, our pride, our stubbornness, our acquisitiveness, our insecurities, our egos; all the cruelties large and small that those of us in the Christian tradition understand to be rooted in original sin. We too often seek advantage over others. We cling to outworn prejudice and fear those who are unfamiliar. Too many of us view life only through the lens of immediate self-interest and crass materialism; in which the world is necessarily a zero-sum game. The strong too often dominate the weak, and too many of those with wealth and with power find all manner of justification for their own privilege in the face of poverty and injustice. And so, for all our technology and scientific advances, we see here in this country and around the globe violence and want and strife that would seem sadly familiar to those in ancient times.
Mike Pence at Notre Dame: 'The Future Is Yours'

                                    Excerpt:
And on this point of which I speak, he (Fr Hesburgh) wrote words of admonition that I hope you will carry into the careers of consequence that unfold before you. He wrote, and I quote, “Notre Dame can and must be a crossroads where all the vital intellectual currents of our time meet in dialogue, where the great issues are plumbed to their depths, where every sincere inquirer is welcomed and listened to, where differences of culture and religion and conviction can coexist with friendship, civility, hospitality, respect and love.”
I enjoyed Ben Sasse's speech emphasizing involvement in your neighborhood and community.

Twitter banned his AOU account months ago though because it was somehow hate speech and I couldn't disagree more with that move.
Twitter is such a cesspool. I'm seeing less and less redeemable qualities on that social media platform as time goes on, it's ridiculous how aggressive and foul people are on there from either side. The bans seem to be all over the place too, some with little rhyme or reason. Facebook is almost tame in comparison these days.

A name to watch is Jason Kenney, he's been idolizing the far right in the US and trying to implement that in Alberta. Like most things, we're 10-15 years behind you guys.

Short of BIG Government Heavy-Hands, "We" won't.

But the real solution has always been right there. GET THE KIDS OUT INTO THE REAL WORLD!!! Get them into nature. Get them into experiences with other people. Get the EFF off the screw-a$$ computers and have them get real. If parents won't do it, empower the school community to do it. Get the damm local governments to provide real world interactions --- regularly through the school systems or summer programs.

... freely distribute hammers with directions as to how to safely Kill the Computers and the Televisions.

OK. Overboard on the last ... but not TOO far overboard.

I was in a communist food line to get into a local Walmart because our state just ended a stupid health order only allowing 75 people in a store at a time... but anyway... I overheard a conversation with some of my fellow peasants. The one Mom was talking to another Mom about this very problem. She is a smoker and admitted she will never quit but she does not want her kids to ever start. The other Mom was saying she feels the same but about Facebook and Social Media.

Is it really that hard to just delete an app on your phone? IS it really that hard to not buy the new PS5 game console? Does your kid really need a TV and computer and cell phone locked up in their room? We once bought a TV for our kids room but after a few days it felt awkward and wrong. If we ever have a moment where we are all around the TV its usually cartoons or family stuff... with me on my smart device watching a game.

My kid was limited on media until he got into high school. No cellphone, no social media, video games only a couple hours on weekends only, TV was limited to 2-3 hours on weekends. Once he got into high school it became a matter of him self regulating with some gentle and at other times not so gentle reminders of how it was impacting him in terms of what he said he wanted to achieve.

Anyhow, I had a blast shooting soda cans with BB guns and watching them explode, shooting bow and arrows, making fake blood to put in his old stuffed animals and using them for target practice(his idea lol), making comic strips for the funny characters we came up with, bringing him to job sites and “paying” him $5 an hour to do simple things like planting plants. Teaching him how to use a skid steer and a mini ex was a bit nerve wracking but he thought it was super cool. Haha.

Some of the stories about Barron and his tantrums leave no doubt he's on the way to douchery as an adult. The Kushners are cut from the same cloth. Corrupt grifters.

Bush and chief of staff at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. For example, former White House chief of staff Andy Card had a trailer set up for his protective detail at the end of his block in Virginia, Atkiss recalled. At the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, a building was constructed specifically for the security detail of two former presidents, he said.

“I’ve seen it accomplished 1,000 different ways,” Atkiss said. “They don’t want to be in their personal space.”

The studio had plenty of natural light. Some considered it akin to a well-heeled lawyer’s study. Most importantly, it opened on a tidy bathroom.

The people who qualify for such protection often occupy expensive, sprawling properties where a detail can use a garage, pool house or other outbuilding as a command post, break room and bathroom.

The episode in Kalorama is unusual because of the lengths to which the agents’ exile took them. In addition to their reliance on the restrooms used by fellow agents assigned to the Obamas and Pences, the detail occasionally popped into neighborhood businesses to avail themselves of the facilities.

“It’s the first time I ever heard of a Secret Service detail having to go to these extremes to find a bathroom,” said one law enforcement official familiar with the situation.
So it absolutely is unique how difficult they made it for them to take a piss or do their job, and everyone knows that Fox News would've run wall-to-wall coverage on Obama running up a six figure tab for refusing to accommodate "the help". And if it's not a big deal, then why are they lying about the decision through a White House spokesperson?

ETA: I understand your bigger point that protection always costs something and that there are many ways of doing it. But the purpose of the article was to talk about their exile that started with the Port-A-John and took them to Obama's garage and then Pence's residence all because they were banned from using one of their six bathrooms. It is not normal for this to happen and for someone to be this unaccommodating... or then to now come out and lie about how the decision was made now that a secret service source leaked what happened and the optics are terrible. If you want to find a more contemporary analog for disrespecting "the help" that's fine, the first thing that popped into my head was the movie where they won't let the maid take a shit in their house.
