FYI, you can go to the NFL as a RS sophomore. As long as you've been in college for 3 years. Pretty sure Michael Crabtree was a RS SO when he left.

Seacláid na hÉireann (Irish Chocolate) had stats that equaled Short, but he also had two knocked down passes. Think about it. People are now calling short a first round draft choice!

Well duh...the rule is 3 years out of high school. I just don't see him leaving that early without a degree.

I think a lot of this speculation can be put to bed if we show improvement on the field, and win games. If we show that we have the potential to be a "great" team next year, I believe that both Cierre and Irish Chocolate return. If we have a devastating end to this season, and take a step back as a program, then they both leave. Just my opinion.

" I go to Notre Dame i don't need football."

I read that as: I go to a real school... so I don't have to stick to football as a career like other athletes at other schools...

Bogtrotter07
09-14-2012, 07:36 AM
And you read it right ACamp. Picture Louis looking up at Kelly and Nolan and nodding his head as he said it.

Kelly also said something like (when talking about the maturation process) when Louis got here he was a handfull, and look at him now!

Nolan, is ready to take Louis on the road because so many people would pay to see it; Nolan as the straigh man, and Louis as Louis.

When he made the purple Kelly comment, Nolan said there was such a thing in this world as colateral, and maybe Nix wouldn't want to use all of his up, he may need it sometime before he was done.

Louis got pretty choked up with pride when he talked about his Mom being at last week's game. He mused that maybe that was why he played so well, and maybe she should be at more. Nolan jumped in with his hand raised and said no, it has to be legal nobody wants to see a line of private jets at the JAX airport.

Good stuff.

He will be coming back next year, right?

Maybe, maybe not. I imagine he'll want to finish his degree. He'll have two years of eligibility left and if his draft grade comes back moderate-to-low it's hard to imagine him not using at least one of those years to finish his degree and improve his draft stock.

Right now I think he's playing at a 4th-5th round draft pick level but only getting better. Could be a second rounder by the end of the year. All I will say is that if he does go pro we look pretty stupid for not targeting another NG type player in the past class or this current one.

7. Quote of the half season
The finalists:

--"I would guess that if you were a red-blooded American man, you'd like to play today. I'm guessing we'll play well."
LSU coach Les Miles to CBS's Tracy Wolfson shortly before the Tigers played (and lost to) Florida in the Swamp.

--"I'm so excited, I'm ready to call my mama."
Notre Dame nose tackle Louis Nix after overtime win against Stanford.

--"&*@%!" (Rhymes with singular Oregon mascot.)
Stanford linebacker Chase Thomas as he walked angrily up the stadium tunnel after a controversial Notre Dame goal-line stand cost the Cardinal the game in overtime.

--"We kind of got basically humbled today."
USC linebacker Hayes Pullard (to the Los Angeles Times) after the Trojans' loss at Stanford, their fourth consecutive defeat to the Cardinal.

--"In retrospect, we probably bit off a bit more than we could chew. … I think embarrassment lasts a lot longer than $860,000."
Savannah State coach Steve Davenport on his athletic director's decision to schedule consecutive road games at Oklahoma State and Florida State for $860,000 of appearance money. Savannah State lost by a combined score of 139-0 -- and it would have been worse had the FSU game not been called with 24 minutes remaining in the second half because of thunderstorms.

And the half-season winner is … The red-blooded American Hatter.

Great stuff. I love Nix.

IMHO, Nix made the biggest play of the game. 1st quarter, Oklahoma's second possession, 3rd and 3 inside the 15 and he tips the ball and we hold OU to a field goal. It set the tone that if you want to get in this endzone, it'll take a lot more than that.

Along time ago, I said that Notre Dame began an evolution towards a modern football monster when a certain very large DT committed to us, when we didn't even have a coach on board. It was a Grace from on high then, and the big man has served as the crystalline catalyst in the middle drawing all manner of great defensive players around him.

I take nothing away from Manti in this. Manti is from Olympus. But the Big Man in the Middle is the Stone upon which everything is built. Enjoy the specialness while we have him folks.

His actions were completely necessary, I'd be interested to see if the BC player losses any PT, as they were in the wrong on that play.

i dont think he loses any PT either, just his tears. thats the only thing he lost. and maybe dignity? or at least man card.

Our chances next year are tremendous even with the current uncertainty about the O-Line. With Big Lou anchoring, and Grace filling in for Manti surrounded by veterans, and Day filling in for KLM, and any of about six guys filling in for Zeke, this defense will be #1 in the country and cover a lot of Offensive struggles --- even there though, IF the O-Line is "just good", we're really loaded around the rest of the offense.

Thank goodness for the Big Man. Rock of the Team.

Beating Bama won't factor into the equation IMO. I would personally be tempted with any grade in the 1st or 2nd round. That is entirely too much money to pass up. Luckily I'm not him, and he may feel differently about the situation from a dollars and cents standpoint.

I would bet he and his mother will have a heart to heart and decide what's best for him, and his family. Obviously we all want him to stay but our motives are for the most part predicated on keeping a great talent on our football team.

We can talk about the importance of finishing his degree but this is life, and the quality of it with his family.

FYI Kelly encourages all draft eligible players to get evaluated and then weigh the pros/cons of coming back or going pro.

Not one kid with a moderate draft grade who has decided to come back has regretted it so far:
-Floyd went from 3rd to high 1st.
-Manti went from 2nd to probably top 10.
-Eifert went from 3rd to probably late 1st.

If there is one truism for this staff it's that they develop players. Over the last couple years we have seen players make huge jumps as they stick around and buy in.

On another note: a couple of the above posts should be trashed. Pollock has actually given the ND front seven tremendous props several times in recent shows. Hate to say told you so, BUT,

Told you so.

I would like to see everybody start to appreciate the high quality of the individuals that ND has brought in under Kelly to make this championship run. Most conventional wisdom says you need to follow the Tressel or Meyer plan and that you need criminals . . .

"She called me every day like 'I can't wait to walk on the field with you for Senior Day.' In high school, she didn't get to do it with me. She barely made it to any of my games. She didn't do the Senior Day in high school and she cried. That was a big one for me."

Nix's mother, Stephanie Wingfield, desperately wanted to see her son honored on Senior Night at Raines High in 2009. She couldn't attend. She had to work a shift at a hospital cafeteria, because someone had to put food on the table. "She just had to work all the time," Nix said. "She couldn't afford to take off." So when her jumbo-sized son with a heart to match took the field that night, he did it alone. "I was the only person who walked on the field by myself," Nix said. "People were like, 'Where are his parents?' She didn't like stuff like that."

I questioned Nix for a long time. He came in really overweight, being homesick came up a lot, and didn't seem to have a real drive early in his career. Not sure if it was the leadership of guys like Kappy and Teo that got this kids head focused in the right direction or the coaches, mother, self motivation, etc; but whatever it was was crutial to this teams success. This guy has been such an intrical part of the nations best defense. Another year and a degree will go a long way for his future. Thank you Irish Chocolate.

So she'll be there in South Bend next November, even if they have to wheel her out on the field. See, she needs two new knees, but without any health insurance, she can't afford it. Nix says he plans to pay for it as soon as he turns pro, so now she's just going to have to wait a year.

Some nights, he slaps on a "Saw" mask, goes out on the Notre Dame campus, jumps out from behind bushes and scares students. When a 330-pound nose guard leaps out at you, your pancreas tends to leap out of you. One poor girl cried. "I've had campus police called on me," Nix admits.

My favorite part ...

Louis Nix is on the verge of a very big step.

Two weeks ago, he asked Kiah what she wanted for Christmas.

She held his hands, looked into his eyes, and said, "A ring."

Nix's nonstop mouth suddenly ... stopped.

"He just looked at me, like, 'Oh, my God. Is she serious?'" says Kiah, who then threw up her hands and said, "Oh, no! Not THAT kind of ring. A BCS championship ring!"

You talk about scary.

Louis has excellence taste in women.

ND DT Louis Nix insisted to me after the game that ND's DL didn't get dominated. He asked: "Do you think Barrett Jones dominated me?"

Pete Thamel ‏@SIPeteThamel
Nix pointed the problem on missed tackles. Why? "I can't explain it. Can you tell me why we're on earth? Can you tell me, what is gravity?"

I agree with him.

I don't think the O-Line dominated. I do however think Lacy and Yeldon dominated.

i think the D Line really struggled disengaging all night, which created a problem. any tiny seam that there was lacy and yeldon found it and exploded through it. backers just didn't seem as decisive as they had been in the past and when they were like stated they missed the tackle.

Louis played with a lot of passion last night and all season! I think he's a 1st team AA next season! Irish Chocolate thank you for a tremendous season and can't wait to see what's in store from you next year!

He's right about that -- he owned Barrett Jones.

I agree with you on this lol. He was the only one on D that won his 1-on-1 matchup consistently.

I have feeling he will come back so much more fierce and determined. Getting outplayed as a team, I don't think Mr. Lou will accept anything less from his teammates and himself next year.

IMO, the big problem was missed tackles by linebacker, safeties, and corners. Nix was in the backfield a lot and so were a lot of players. Difference was we whiffed on the tackels. Haven't counted but I would be that if you went back and did so, there was around 7-8 missed tackles in the backfield for negative plays.

We may not have a problem with leadership next season like we have thought.
