"That was probably the most excited I've been of any offer I have received," Welch said. "It was the one school I'd been waiting for. My uncle played there. I grew up a Notre Dame fan. That's been a dream school of mine. Then going to high school, watching Kyle go through the process and he chose Notre Dame. That's the school I've been waiting for. I was hoping for this offer."

Quote is from Rivals 5/14. Gotta love a kid with that much enthusiasm.

Nice to see a kid that gets as excited as we would.

Did they mention the uncle by name? There was a Bob Welch that was a backup punter for Holtz in '86 and another that played in '44 (more like a great, great uncle). Of course the uncle could be on his mom's side.

Cincinnati Elder tight end Alex Welch is expected to commit to Notre Dame by the end of the week. Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas cornerback Cody Riggs reportedly wants to commit to Notre Dame, but longtime Aquinas coach George Smith isn't big on his players making such early decisions and wants his players to see numerous schools before deciding. Cape Coral (Fla.) High cornerback Spencer Boyd is a heavy Notre Dame lean, but a recent Miami offer could put a twist on things.

Wanted to post this quote for all of my fellow Irish fans craving some good news. This is From Ferrel at Rivals, the same man who said that Hurst was a heavy ND lean, so take itwith a grain of salt.

Welch got his offer a week ago today. It's May 21st not January 21st. Recruits have got almost 9 months to make a decision.

Keep in mind TE is not a prority need in this class. Rudolph, Ragone, Fauria each have 3 years of eligibility. Eifert and Golic have 4+. And there's a walkon named Burger that impressed in Spring Practice.

Unless Ragone's knees don't hold up or Eifert is moved to WR (there are more bodies there than at TE) or Golic to ... It would make sense for ND to continue to evaluate TEs and continue to watch those they already know like Richardson from Fauria's school who camped at ND last summer. These are juniors, ND has their senior season to watch and evaluate development.

Uninformed sources at IrishEnvy who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to comment verified unequivically that this report is unverified.

Others equally uninformed will challenge the validity of that statement.

Meanwhile ESPN stands by their 5/20 storyline that Alex Welch:

Is it just me or does Scout seem to think more highly of ND verbals so far.

Scout has WR Smith at 21 while Rivals is 60
Scout has Lombard at #1 OG while Rivals has him out of sight

Mike Frank used to lament Scout's rankings. Now he's gone and ...

Saw Elder playing on ESPN this afternoon and Welch looked real good blocking. He was owning the DE which was getting upset and started to take cheap shots at Welch. Welch has a nice little mean streak to him. Enjoyed seeing him play today.

QB Andrew Hendrix and TE Alex Welch who have committed to ND, are showing no signs of changing their minds after the firing of Charlie Weis. Hendrix and Welch both say they want to see who ND hires to replace Weis, but the two say they remain committed to ND and highly doubt they would consider any other school.<!-- end free preview text -->

Seriously guys, there are bigger needs than a 2nd TE in this class. Its called balance at the positions, injuries hurt depth for a year, getting a 2nd TE would create bigger holes at other positions. If Golson or Hendrix go down this year, should we get another QB to go along with Zaire?

Besides, if we get a CAT player in this class, Mattingly could easily be shifted over to TE.

We may want to take a 2nd TE in the 2013 class, but I don't see how that has anything to do with Alex Welch's injury, at least not directly. Alex will be back strong as ever in 2013, unless his knee injury is Cam-Roberson-severe, and as far as I've heard we have no reason to think it is that bad. His injury hurts our TE depth this year, not next year.

Now, if the point is just that this injury shows that our TE depth is a little lacking, and we should really get another TE in 2013 to protect against another injury like this next year, then I get that and I agree that taking a second TE is not a bad idea, as we have the spots right now. I think we should also take an OG, as we are thin there with Carrico gone and Cave and Golic graduating, and I'm surprised we aren't trying harder to get a true NG like Nix (maybe we can wait till 2014 for that though).

After sifting through video for the season primer (wink, wink) I noticed Welch in the weight room looking MASSIVE. That was in the spring.

No disrespect to Alex, but why would bumping the thread of a guy who has barely been able to play in three seasons scare the shits out of you?

BK has said numerous times that he has the best hands on the team...he would have been likely #2 TE last year and will be called upon often this year...probably our best inline blocker at the TE position and will def be a target for us especially utilizing 2 TE sets

Wildman, after bumping this thread and scaring the shiit out of me, what are you speaking about? What primer?

Respectfully,

And will there be a thread bump of a Friday event coming this week?

I was searching video for the 13 season primer with TP.

But, Alex grabbed my attention just from the sheer size of him and had me excited for w TE sets.. that's all.

No disrespect to Alex, but why would bumping the thread of a guy who has barely been able to play in three seasons scare the shits out of you?

Because Alex Welch is a guy that is that good, (home town intel says better than Rudolph per age) that has had the worst luck ever!

If he has a good year everybody will be shocked; and it is more important and one of the big things that could make Tommy go! (Or a more inexperienced quarterback.)

So is there a primer? Where is it located. I couldn't find it but consider the source.

81 Brooks, Joey Tight End 6-5/222 GS Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep
9 Heuerman, Mike Tight End 6-3.5/218 FR Naples, FL/Barron Collier

Not that. Smythe was not listed on the Spring 2013 Roster. I like official online roster because it us usually accurate, if but a little behind and because you can click on headings to get the list alpha, numeric, or by position.

Believe it or not, for a while Michigan had more golf courses than any state in the nation! I know this because I used to sell and install computer systems in Country Clubs, Riding Clubs, Tennis, and Yacht Clubs. A few shooting clubs too. It was a tough job, but someone had to do it.

The simple-minded impressions that I get from that picture are:

1). the guys seem to really like one another; a 5* plus; and
2). Ben Koyack looks the part of a stud TE.

Both of these impressions find warm approval by me.

CanadalovesND

CBK should just let him go.

He'd be 3rd TE on the depth chart once again barring injury.

I'd rather have the younger guys get more reps.

Imagine if we keep Welch. That's three senior TEs with no eligibility remaining after 2014-15 season. We'd be going into the following season with very little experience at the position.

BK should look to the future.

yeah but if Troy went down with an injury do you think Koyack could handle the in-line blocking?

This is the issue. If everybody stays healthy we don't need Welch ... but if Niklas goes down then he might be a critical player, depending on whether any of the other guys can fill his role. Welch would at least be a physically mature 5th year senior who would likely have a physicality edge over our other TEs.

We know that Kelly thinks highly of Welch, just hasn't found an opportunity to get him on the field.

CanadalovesND

If that's the case, take a page out of Stanford's play book; throw an extra OL on the field. Use him as an in-line blocker.

I think Smythe will be ready to play next year though, and we didn't have an option like that at ILB last year. If Welch is ready to play, healthy and willing, then keep him. Otherwise, let him find the playing time he wants at another school and bring on the next generation.

Bogtrotter07

I think Welch is worth it. When Eifert was here the coaches said he had the softest, maybe the best hands on the team. And he can block. He has just never been healthy.

Welch - John Mackey Tight End of the Week (http://www.muredhawks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=26100&ATCLID=209703395)

Alex Welch, a member of the Miami University football team has been named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week following his efforts versus UMass last Saturday afternoon. The announcement was made by the John Mackey Award on Wednesday, October 8.

Welch finished the game with five receptions for 63 yards (both career-bests), helping the RedHawks erase a 41-14 deficit versus the Minutemen and a 21-game losing streak. Four of his five catches resulted in first downs and was part of an offensive unit that allowed just one sack in 58 pass attempts.

The fifth-year senior is third on the team with 17 receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns this season. Welch entered the year with just one catch in 22 career games at Notre Dame.

The 2014 John Mackey recipient will be announced on December 10, 2014 and presented live on December 11, 2014 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. Other key dates include the announcement of the Midseason Watch List on October 13, 2014, the Mackey Semi-finalists on November 17, 2014 and the Mackey Finalists on November 24, 2014. All future announcements can be found at www.johnmackeyaward.com.

The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by tight ends during the active season. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgment does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process.

The John Mackey Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. The 21 awards boast 678 years of tradition-selection excellence. Visit National College Football Awards Association (http://www.ncfaa.org) to learn more about our story.

Awesome, good for him.

And yet, in hindsight, I feel like he should have stayed at ND. He would absolutely be playing this year for us. He would give us more flexibility to play two TEs and could really boost the run game. Koyack, his game-winning catch on Saturday notwithstanding, has hardly seized the job ... he is playing as much as he is mostly because we don't have another TE who is both physically and mentally ready to be a bigtime college football TE. I can't help but feel that Welch would have been able to rotate in with some regularity.
