St. Xavier junior OL Matt James has offers from UC, Illinois and Tennessee, St. X football coach Steve Specht said in an e-mail this afternoon.

James, who is 6 feet 7 and about 290 pounds, is one of the state's top 2010 prospects.

I wish I had paid attention when he came into town to play Trinity a month ago, but didn't see this thread. But their whole OL was slow I thought, and was schooled by the smaller, faster Trinity team, who won big.

Alright, I was right originally, but I got my players mixed up. But I knew he was offered, as it was fixed already in the title of the thread.

Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier offensive lineman Matt James already had a very impressive scholarship offer list that included Ohio State, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Alabama, Cincinnati, Illinois and Stanford. The list has become even more impressive in the past week.

The 6-foot-8 and 280-pound James has added scholarship offers from LSU, Penn State, Florida State and Miami.

OSU boards reporting that Matt has eliminated OSU or that the OSU staff has backed off, not sure which came first... probably the former. In any case, look for a commitment to ND soon.

On a side note, it seems like Hurst has eliminated ND. Would be a fair trade if we got Hurst instead.

Just read up on him. He told both Irish Sports Daily and Bucknuts that all 3 (ND, OSU and Cinci) are dead even right now, and that he's putting off his recruiting until his football season starts again. He'll be taking official visits and therefore won't be announcing soon like he said. He'll be at USC-OSU, and he can't remember which ND game he'll be attending (his schedule only permits one). He can go to any Cinci home game b/c of his location. He's genuinely torn between the 3 schools...

OT Matt James maintains a top 4 of ND OSU CIN UF. Wants to make OVs to all 4 before making decision. Made another unofficial to ND for MSU game.

I wanted to see how the offensive line looked under (offensive line) coach Verducci, and you can tell they've really developed.

He will also move up to the No. 7 offensive tackle. James is considering Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Jimbo Fisher doesn't run FSU. All the coaches on the team were hired by Bowden. I could see Georgia, but you don't go from Cinci to go to Colorado and or teams like Illinois, its a lateral move. Kelly is going to hedge his bets until things at ND sort themselves out. He is making good money at Cincy and if the opportunity opens up I would be shocked if he didn't take the ND job.

At Cincinnati he can be the Bobby Bowden of the Big East winning the conference and getting a lock on a BCS bowl. At UGA he get to compete for 3rd place in the SEC East.

Cincinnati has the 109th toughest schedule according to Sagarin; UGA is #3.

Jim Leavitt had the chance to jump to several big name programs. He stayed at USF with a steady diet of Big East wins supplemented with a rugged Out of Conference schedule including Wofford, Western Kentucky, and Charleston Southern. He's got the 143rd toughest schedule AND a #21 Coaches Ranking.

What will make those decisions even worse is seeing them win at another school while Auburn and Georgia go back to mediocratyThere's one major difference. Tuberville was winning the rivalry games. In fact, Auburn beat 'Bama for 6 straight times for the first time ever under him. Richt is not. He is 2-6 against Florida.

Auburn isn't exactly slipping to mediocrity. They are plagued by turnovers and a weak D, but after the first few games of his first year as HC, Chizik is looking like he's going to have success.

You would have to think that James would follow Brian Kelly if he was offered the ND gig, right? Or at least it should eliminate Cincy because Kelly's possible replacement can't have too impressive of a background.

This seemed like a two horse race for a long time with ND and Cincy in the battle. I didn't think OSU was still in it and I never heard of Florida being in it.

If James still makes the trip to the banquet I think he's Irish. Weis will be at the banquet and it will be closed to the public, so I bet it will be an emotional event. Could be a great tool to get a recruit to feel the family environment.

South Bend Tribune: Notre Dame football: Cincy coaches mum on Irish recruits (http://www.southbendtribune.com/article/20091214/SPORTS13/912149923/1023/SPORTS13)

By JIM MEENAN Tribune Staff Writer

Two Cincinnati high school coaches Monday could not deliver good news on two prep recruits Notre Dame is courting for the class of 2010.But they also did not deliver any bad news on the yet-to-be-determined final decisions of Moeller quarterback Andrew Hendrix and St. Xavier offensive lineman Matt James.

Neither coach wavered, though, when it came to discussing the man who is, right now, the most famous person who used to live in Cincinnati - Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly.

“I think Notre Dame made a perfect decision,” said St. Xavier coach Steve Specht. “He's one of the top five college coaches in the country.

...

James, a 6-foot-7, 285-pound offensive linemen, is the kind of player, Specht said, “who can play on Sundays.”

“He's a great kid who works as hard in practice as he does in the games,” he added.

His earlier visit was to have occurred the weekend after Weis was fired. That visit never took place.

Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida, and Kelly's former school, Cincinnati, are the final four for James.

He has only visited Ohio State, Specht said. He is still trying to set up a visit to Florida and spoke to Kelly recently and plans to set up a visit soon at Notre Dame.

“The sky's the limit for that young man,” Specht said.

But his decision on college could still be quite a ways off.

“Right now he is just trying to regain his bearings,” Specht said. “I don't think he is going to make his decision until signing day.”

Not according to ISD, he is down to OSU and ND from what they can tell, but they say he plays things close to the vest. Plus, with the current situation at Florida as it is at the moment, I would think they would weigh even more heavily in our or tOSU's favor.

I would have to agree w/ you. There's something fishy when a HC at a major CFB power goes from retirement one day to "indefinite leave" the next!?! I believe the "indefinite leave" statement came out as a "stop gap" for recruit defections!

Yea, it would be nice if they actually show some interest in the kid....I mean the scholarship offer and the phone calls are nice.......but let's get this kid a Hummer or maybe a nice house over in Elkhart........that would be really stepping up to the plate....

I'd be worried.... when's he gonna flip again... particularly when it's your (recruits) career on the line... You don't want to go into an unstable situation... Tebow isn't gonna be there to cry and write bible passages on his face - begging Urbey not to leave.

Again..... Stay classy JefMaj. You just really cant grow up and get over it can ya?

Anyways, back on subject. I really like our chances with James. For along time, it seemed to be down to ND and Cincy, but with us picking up Kelly, it then seems to switch to ND and OSU.

One of them didnt change...... that being us. Im thinking Kelly will pull this big mamah jama OT towards the golden dome when its all said and done.

Like with Seantrel Henderson Browning coming to ND as OL coach should have more impact on Matt James that the Meyer Saga. Nix committing to ND without a head coach or a DL coach was an exception. Most players aren't going to pull the trigger with so much in doubt. With Browning on board James, Henderson and maybe Stone will be in a position to evaluate who the coaches are that will help shape their future.

Browning is a Midwest guy, born in Ohio long time OL coach at Minnesota. He should have a relationship with James high school coach. As a GA at Tennessee Browning was permitted to make phone calls to recruits so a call from ND to James shouldn't be his first.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Per ISD, he is looking at a visit to ND campus on the 23rd or 30th. However, he does have a visit to Florida on Jan 16th and a tentative visit scheduled with UC on the 23rd, but he will be making a visit back to South Bend sometime in January. He did have an official visit to tOSU in mid December as well. Many still believe it's between ND and tOSU.

All I have read is how mean and vicious of a lineman he is, and thats how our O-linemen should be. Big- huge maulers who will push the ref out of the way to open a hole for our backs.

Give me a mean, huge midwestern O-lineman over anyone else any day!

Per Bill Kurelic ESPN

<!-- begin free preview text -->After Brian Kelly landed the Notre Dame job, the first uncommitted recruit he contacted was offensive lineman Matt James. James has narrowed his choices down to Notre Dame, Ohio State, Cincinnati and Florida. Kelly had been recruiting James while he was at Cincinnati and quickly picked things up with the huge lineman at his new school. James has made an official visit to Ohio State, and has visits set to Florida Jan. 15 and Cincinnati Jan. 22. He will also make an official visit to Notre Dame. At this point the Irish have only one offensive line commitment, Christian Lombard. While Lombard is one of the top offensive line prospects in the Midwest, a priority for Kelly is to land at least one more outstanding offensive lineman for his 2010 class.<!-- end free preview text -->

It's ohio state, but nothing to get worried about he said he still has to take his 3 official visits, so he said he still has a long long way to go before he comes to his decision. He said kelly coming to nd helped him alot with nd. His last 3 visits will be nd cincy and florida. He said he liked the strength coach Longo more than mendoza and was more comfortable with him. He said it was a little awkward with everybody being pissed about kelly, but he has a good realtionship with and knows hes a good guy. So I think he ends up at nd

New article on James: Recruiting roller coaster leaves St. Xavier standout Matt James undecided | cincinnati.com | Cincinnati.Com (http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20100106/SPT030101/301060050/)

We probably will have to play a wait-and-see game with him, as people have speculated in the past.

BGIF
01-06-2010, 07:34 PM
James, who is 6 feet 8 and 290 pounds, said he plans to take visits to Florida (Jan. 16), UC (Jan. 21) and Notre Dame (Jan. 29). He took an official visit to Ohio State on Dec. 12.

Because of the upcoming visits, James said he will likely miss the next three Friday basketball games that the Bombers are scheduled to play.

James, who was Division I first-team all-state this season, said he doesn’t want to let his basketball teammates down, but understands his college decision – which affects his next four years – is more important.

“I’ve advised Matt to wait until he felt comfortable with his final decision,” Specht said. “Obviously Ohio State is the only school that has been consistent from Day One so Matt really has to do his due diligence on the other three.”

I know that we have not talked about Matt too much recently, but apparently Kelly is visiting him this week - however I can't see when, as it's a premium article on ISD. BK is really putting the full-court press on him: visiting this week, offering one of his best friends, and having him come to ND this weekend.

If we were able to land James, I would be very, very excited! I think it would be a tremendous help for our line... let's go BK (bring him a jersey :) ! )

Everyone so often this kid pops up in my mind and he makes me feel very fortunate. When you are young you do silly things and take a lot more risks. It was so tragic what happened and really could have happened to a lot of people. The way his friends and family remembered him told me an awful lot more about the kid than what the situation presented itself as.

Yeah, I was actually down in Panama City Beach for spring break the week that it happened. I remember driving by that hotel the next day and seeing all of the emergency response vehicles and people crowded in front.
