he visited last year for the USC game. he also camped at ND last weekend and put on a very impressive show, catching the eye of CW.

He has a sister who went to ND and she married Gerome Sapp.

Being close to South Bend, Daniel has been able to accept the coaches' invites to every home game so far.

It's hard to tell if he will be in the next wave of offers that go out. I suppose that will depend on the remainer of his Junior season and how the 2009 class shapes up at the WR position and the numbers overall.

Quiet Smith quite a catch
By AL LESAR
Tribune Columnist

SOUTH BEND — Size sets him apart. Talent gives him the edge.

Attitude makes him special.

For a 6-foot-4, 205-pound junior wide receiver phenom for the Clay High football team, Daniel Smith knows how to bite off more than a slice of humble pie.

"I'm a quiet guy," Smith said. "If you walk into a room, I won't be the first person you notice in a crowd."

According to Zach Matthews, a key defensive player for St. Joseph's, he's the first person the Indians noticed on the football field last week.

"Before every play, it'd be, 'Where's Smith? Where's Smith?'" Matthews said after the Indians' win in a wild game last Friday.

By the time St. Joe's double coverage found Smith, it was usually at the end of a pass completion. He caught five passes for about 150 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown.

I saw Smith play last night against Lowell. Lowell won 49-20, but Smith looked like a great player. He showed tremendous body control, made some great catches, and was very hard to bring down. He also is a very physical receiver and very well-built for a high school junior. I found myself wondering if he might even grow into a tight end for the Irish. He is very physical.

Not sure if it's official yet, but it seems like it's gonna happen. Like what I'm reading about him. He's now listed as 6'4" 205 with 4.6 speed. Hope he's a great recruiter like the Caveman was for us last year.

Doesn't matter when he announces, now that he's announced, he's officially outside the top 100 for next year. I'm very happy for Dan, I think he'll come in and do a great job for us. This guy's highlight tape is sick. His quarterback sucks and he has to battle for every pass. The most impressive highlight is a tremendous catch on a slant, Smith slips on the turf, falls to his knees, leaps off of his knees, falls backward and makes an impressive catch. I can't wait to see him on the fade routes from Clausen in 2010.

Also, team has new coaching staff/quarterback, which both looked horrible. Smith was not getting the touches he should have, even when streaking down the field wide open, waving his hands. Coach looked like he wanted to use him more as a decoy. The team they played is not that great but interestingly has some former ND football players coaching it, including Darius Walker, helping out.

YouTube - Gehrig Dieter Washington HS Game #1 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHKqSz6u-ys)

Smith is good kid but never would go over the middle to get a ball. His catches were based on out jumping small corners. #4 was all over the field on both sides of ball.
Gman is a stud

Panther, doesn't look like you've seen much of Daniel Smith. Yes, he does catch balls by out jumping the "small" corners. But let's be candid, so did Stovall, McKnight, Shark, Tate, and Floyd. That's the primary reason to recruit "tall" reveivers and create mismatches.

But if you watch that video you'll see Smith makes catches on the sidelines, downfield, AND over the middle. He isn't a one act pony. He makes nice catches with his back to the QB AND his back to the defenders - in traffic. I thought the most impressive catch was at the 3:50 mark where his feet come out from under him and slips to the ground but bounces up and with outstretched arms makes a tremendous catch. Smith makes a lot of his catches with his hands - away from his body. Something that many talented HS receivers don't do.

Some coaches recruit kids that have the raw tools to play the game...and then the coach molds the kid to their strenghts. I think Daniel is going to be a good player at ND...tall, athletic, and a GREAT attitude.

He seems like the exact kind of kid that gets over-looked by the recruiting services: local Indiana kid with excellent game but less than stellar measurables (here avg. WR speed) and so they just forget about him. The kid is a is a big, solid athlete with great hands and good awareness: he is going to be good

He also committed to ND very early, actually as soon as he was offered on junior day, and didn't attend any camps. Recruiting services (and many ND fans, sadly) just forgot about him. He would have been offered by many more schools had he not committed early and been so solid to ND.

The same thing happened with Christian Lombard. I would get annoyed at ND fans who would forget about this stud when talking about last year's class, b/c a lot of people forgot abut him as he was our first commit (not including Chris The Clown Martin). Now Christian is fighting hard to make the 2 deep already, when most assumed he'd redshirt (which I hope he does to get stronger/more seasoned).

I'm really excited to see what he can offer. I like that the article mentions how he's really been forgotten about (by everyone besides the coaching staff that is), and I really feel like he's going to be valuable to have next year because of his size. Man, just excited to see what this offense can do in Year 3!

If we have a QB... This team is one decent QB away from being a BCS bowl caliber team, I have never doubted that. Many of the skill players are being overlooked, but if they have a better QB, they could shine...

Just like the Colts with Peyton Manning,, I doubt we will get a Manning type of player, but my point is that a better QB can make those around him look much better, show their true potential...

"They sleep" and "people are definitively sleepy."

Sadly, I am about the same ages of these guys, and I had to look up what this phrase meant. I am not a cool fellow.

Apparently, it means to ignore someone and not give the respect or recognition they deserve.

Example: Don't sleep on Daniel Smith. He has all the tools and has been working hard all off-season to be a factor in more than just the run game.

Man, you hate to see a player's career end with a mid-season injury. He was a great glue guy who worked hard, did the dirty work and set an example for the younger receivers. Kelly said in his teleconference today that the locker room was emotional at halftime over Smith's injury and Kelly gave the guys something of a win-one-for-the-gipper speech -- and they really responded. Danny will really be missed.

Hope to see C.J. Prosise step into the void here. Physically he seems like the likeliest candidate to step into Daniel Smith's role as a WR/H-back. Him or Onwualu.

He's got some artistic talent. Good for him and I hope he can parlay that into something going forward.

As for his ND career likely coming to an end? I don't feel bad for him. In fact, I very much hate him for getting with Skylar Diggins.

I love Maty Mauk!

This appears under your user name. After that, nothing else you say really matters

Congrats to Daniel and Skylar. According to 2/3's of my FB friends, he's the luckiest man in America.

Not at all. She's a very beautiful woman.

I couldn't have a WNBA player as a partner though. She'd forget what's up, talk some yingyang to me, I'd be forced to take her out to the drive way and dust her off 10-love. Then I'd tell her to get back in her apron and whip me up some cornbread.

You wouldn't score a point against her.

Hey... I don't know how to make cornbread and I'd hate for that batter to stain her clothes. I'll be out in the garage putting new pads on her Benzo.

You wouldn't score a point against her.

Yeah right... but I would've let he get a few jumpers off because I'm a gentleman.

I don't think that was the type of scoring he was referring to. lol
