Silly Season 2015/2016 (Coaching Changes)

Coach Hot Seat Ratings - CBSSports.com - Dennis Dodd

Dennis Dodd's Grading
0 Untouchable
1 Very safe, change unlikely
2 Safe... but you never know
3 Starting to feel the pressure
4 Warm, better start winning
5 Hot seat! Win or be fired

Two coaches drew a 5, the worse score, "Win or Be Fired", Illinois' Tim Beckman and UVA's Mike London. Beckman has had a winning year in his 3 seasons at UI but he's getting close at 6-7, trending upward. London's had one winning season - 3 years ago. Both might have been gone last season but for late season wins ... one each, Beckman over PSU and London over Miami.

Seven coaches got a 4, "Warm, better start winning, like Beckman and London they coach at school's that usually dwell in the subbasements, Ron Turner, FIU, Trent Miles, GSU, Norm Chow UHI, Paul Petrino, UID, Paul Rhoades, ISU, and Paul Haynes, Kent St.

Charlie Strong, UTX, drew a 3, "Starting to feel the pressure". He drew the lowest score of the major programs but he's only entering his 2nd year. Dodd usually gives the new or relatively new coaches a secure grade.

I've got to think it's Warm for Al Golden, at da U. Mike London saved his job with a late season win over Miami. What did that say about Golden? It's year #5 at Miami.

Dana Holgerson's averaging 7-6 through 4 season at WVU. Doesn't strike me as Safe.

Brian Kelly is "Safe" at ND averaging 9-4 yearly, 0.692. Good for Monk's Decades of Doom but he needs to average 10-3 to get in Holtz's Territory, and average 11-2 to walk with Rock, Leahy, and Ara.

Bob Davie also drew a 2 from Dodd, "Safe" although he's averaged less than 4 wins a season at UNM. Whole different expectation level.

ND's Opponent Coaches Grades
UTX Strong 3 (Starting to feel the pressure)
UVA London 5 (Hot seat! Win or be fired)
GT Johnson 1 (1 Very safe, change unlikely)
UMA Whipple 2 (Safe... but you never know)
CL Swinney 0 (0 Untouchable)
NAV Niumatalolo 0
USC Sarkisian 1
TEM Ruhle 2
PIT Narduzzi 1
WF Clawson 3
BC Addazio 2
SU Shaw 0

Only one opponent coach on the block, London UVA.

Three opponent coaches, "Untouchable", Swinney CL, Niumatalolo NAV, and Shaw SU.

I'm surprised Shaw is untouchable. I certainly don't think he's higher than a 1 or a 2, but Stanford certainly seemed to take a step back last season. The last of Harbaugh's players have moved on and it's all Shaw now. They struggled last season, and unfortunately we wound up in another tight game with them despite the fact they also ended with an 8-5 schedule. Other than an upset against UCLA, Stanford really didn't impress in any of their games last season. They lost to all their other ranked opponents. I don't expect him to get the boot as a result of that, but I'd wager he's closer to a 1 or a 1.5 right now as alumni will start watching him closer and deciding if they can keep the Harbaugh magic going.

That's Dodd's grading. I'm sure fans at a lot of schools differ with his grading.

Shaw has the second best record of any football coach at SU that's coached at least 20 games going back over 100 years. He trails only Pop Warner and that by less than 0.004 percentage points.

Yes, he had a 5 loss season last year after averaging 2 losses a season. Harbaugh by comparison only had one season where he didn't lose 5 games while at SU.

Yes, there was a franchise QB involved but what most people tend to forget is Shaw was Harbaugh's OC. When Harbaugh left the offense stayed the same. Shaw had luck but probably more significantly Luck had Shaw to ease the coaching transition.

Despite the loss of Harbaugh's draw with recruits Shaw has done well. He has SU in Top 20 classes (rivals) except for one year ('12?) when they only took about a dozen in the class.

As for SU alumni watching the coach more closely, do they sell out the stadium yet?

In those 5 loses last year, SU lost to USC, ND, and Utah eadch by 3 pts.

ASU beat SU by 2 TDs and ORE took'em to the woodshed, a 4TD loss.

Shaw's defense only gave up 213 pts on the season with ASU and ORE scoring 71 of those points.

His offense last year scored about 100 fewer points than the year before but also allowed about 50 fewer points.

They certainly were in some close games. I don't think they should have lost to Utah though. Utah isn't a terrible team at all, but I thought Stanford was tougher. This should be an interesting year for the Cardinal. If they take a step back again, maybe they're returning to mediocrity? Maybe they smash Oregon in the mouth again, but they could also drop a game against Washington. They've got UCLA again, Arizona, us, and of course USC. They very well could wind up with 5 losses again.
