2017 NCAA Lacrosse Open Thread

Notre Dame takes on Team USA today. You can watch live here: U.S. Men's Team vs. Notre Dame | US Lacrosse

The game will likely be a bloodbath. But will be more competitive than if, say, Notre Dame basketball took on Team USA. As an aside, Matt Kavanagh made the Team USA roster for this game.

Major defensive gaffes and unforced TOs against Team USA. Bellermine scrimmage wasn't much of a test. Lots of uncharted water ahead. Goalie and pole are the strength of this team. FOs still sub-par. Don't see a lot of scoring from the midfield aside from Serge. Friends and family are a recurring theme in this Program. Like how the attack meshes. Coach Parcells says it best "you are what your record says you are".

Did you get to watch the Bellarmine scrimmage? If so, I'd love to hear what you thought. I'm not going to make it to any of the spring scrimmages but did get to watch some of fall ball and the scrimmage against Team USA. Really wish I could see the Air Force one this weekend as Air Force is a legit team.

Speaking of the Team USA game I thought Serge, Ryder, Mikey, Drew Schantz, John Sexton all really looked like they belonged against to notch competition. I'm kind of shocked to see McNamara running on 1s and being on EMO but I guess we'll see. Thought Gleason (who played a lot of attack in the fall) and Marini were both tentative but I guess that's sort of to be expected against that level of competition.

And Team USA was basically getting all their goals off of individual efforts or unsettled situations. Bodes well for the defense, although I don't think anyone but Epple is really that great of an on ball defender and he has reallllllly been limited by injuries recently.

Gleason played much better in the second scrimmage. Attack is the best part of the team offensively. Serge rocked against weak competition. Not a big fan of the other middies. They're either too short or don't have the offensive skills (some struggle with catching and throwing while others have some of the weakest shots I've seen in the ACC) necessary to win a national title or compete for the ACC championship. Like the SSDMs and the LSM. You're right on the cover skills at close D. DC has a two life long LSMs playing close. Some can be converted and some can't. Other poles lack the requisite stick skills. Look for UNC and Denver to exploit this unit's inability to cover man to man. Goalie is a big strength. Based on where the team is now, I'm predicting a middle of the pack finish in the ACC (7-4 overall?). With Doss, Serge and Epple graduating this spring, I believe this Program may have peaked two years ago.

Week 1 and we've already got a successful hidden ball trick:

Hopkins looked like the real deal in the second half. IMO, this is the most talented team they've had in awhile.

I'm glad they're talented this year. They flood the ESPN schedule again! Was pretty impressed with Hop on offense last night, also liked a couple of the Navy kids. The D man on Stanwick was talented as well as that giant on attack. He ran himself into some terrible doubles last night, but he moves well for a big kid.
