Coaching Accomplishments


• 2003: Led BC to an 8-5 record, which included road victories over No. 25 Penn State and No. 12 Virginia Tech and the Eagles' fourth win in five years over archrival Notre Dame. The Eagles accepted a bid to the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl, marking their fifth straight bowl game appearance. By defeating Colorado State, 35-21, the Eagles became the only team in America to have won a bowl game for the past four consecutive seasons.
• 2002: Led BC to a 9-4 record and a 51-25 win over Toledo in the Motor City Bowl, BC's fourth straight bowl game appearance and third consecutive bowl game victory. Won 32 games over a four-year period, tying the 1981-84 group for the most wins over a four-year period in the past 60 years of BC football.
• 2001: Led BC to its third straight winning season with a 8-4 record, a 4-3 mark in BIG EAST play and a top 25 finish in both major polls for the first time in seven years.
• 2000: Led Boston College to its second consecutive winning season with a 7-5 record and a second straight bowl appearance, a 31-17 win over Arizona State in the Aloha Bowl.
• 1999: Engineered the third-best turnaround in Division I college football - Eagles finished the regular season with an 8-3 record and a top-25 national ranking.
• 1998: All-American Mike Cloud becomes Boston College's all-time leading rusher.
• Virginia scored 320 points during the 1996 regular season to become the first ACC team to score at least 300 points in eight consecutive years.
• 1996: Virginia goes to the Carquest Bowl, marking the 12th time in 18 years O'Brien was on a staff that played in a bowl game.
• 1995: Virginia wins ACC championship, the second while O'Brien was on staff.

2004 - Boston College and Northwestern win the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Academic Achievement Award with a 100% graduation rate for the entering class of 1998-99.
2003 - BC's 95% graduation rate is best in Division I-A football.

1968-70: A three-year starter at defensive end from 1968-70 at the U.S. Naval Academy.

• A three-year starter at defensive end for the Midshipmen from 1968-70.
• Inducted into the St. Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987, one of the youngest ever selected, joining fellow alumni such as baseball Hall of Famer Jim Bunning and Notre Dame All-American quarterback George Ratterman.

Yeah that's a violation of an unwritten rule. It'd be like Billy Martin coaching the Red Sox...besides, I hope Ty gets the UW gig (or heads to the NFL to coach in AZ).
