NCAA FB ‘06: Jumping Out Of Madden’s Shadow

Each July, loyal fans of the EA NCAA Football series wait for the arrival of the upcoming season's edition of the popular game series. Each July, new gamers are also attracted to this now popular series and so far EA has always found a way to out do the previous year’s version but never quite step out of the shadow of the series older brother, Madden Football.

However, this year NCAA Football ’06 has stepped to the fore front of the gaming market and may give Madden a run for its money. I have always been a loyal fan to the NCAA series and have every game since the days of Bill Walsh’s College Football on Sega. For those of you that are accustomed to the EA franchise, you know that they always jam pack new features into each year’s version that attempt to “entice” those fair weathered fans to buy the game. That said, EA has truly outdone themselves this year.

The first time you put in the game into your XBox or PS2, you will find that as always it asks for your favorite team, which of course is Notre Dame. From there, you will begin the journey of the new feature, "Race for the Heisman." This new feature sticks you into the game as a high school senior wishing to impress college scouts in order to get recruited by your favorite school. You select what position you want to play and you then run drills according to that position. If you do well enough, you will get the big scholarship offers. Don’t worry though, even if you can’t run or throw at all, you can always walk-on at your desired school. Once you have been recruited you begin your life as a college athlete, right down to your very own dorm room, which in turn serves as a launching pad to various tasks that you can view or complete. You have 4 years to win the elusive Heisman Trophy, and if you’re just that good, you can leave early. For you Madden fans, you can even export yourself into a Madden draft class and continue on your career in the NFL. The downside to the "Race for the Heisman" is that you can’t recruit or cut players, you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. Overall this is a neat new feature that should attract fans to the game.

Thanks to Ryan (KMac151993) for writing the IrishEnvy exclusive review of NCAA Football '06. If any of you have the game, be sure to hit him up and play online.

The only thing I don't like about the NCAA Football '06 is that they went with Desmond Howard on the cover... damn Wolverines. I definitely need to go out and purchase the game.

Do you have any more info about ESPN adding to the game for next season? Are they waiting for the release of the new platform to do this?

As far as I know it will still be released on PS2, although Xbox360 will prolly get the game and I'd assume PSP would also get it next year. The deal with ESPN will truely make EA's offering an exclusive video game. I am not sure of when the PS3 is to debut but I would guess that EA would put out at least one more title on the PS2 before it switches over. On the other hand, an issue with the game I dislike, and its a petty detail but the historical rosters, the '93 is pretty well put together but the '92 squad is almost identical to the the '93 as is the '90 squad. For instance on the '90 squad there is no Watters at TB but rather a still highschool senior Lee Bectin as the starting TB. This happens with most of the roster as it appears they took the '93 squad and used it again and again for the most part. And then the '93 squad does not included Randy Kinder, Robert Farmer or Marc Edwards all who saw lots of action but it does include a red-shirted Ron Powlus.

I finally sprung the cash and bought the game as it was on sale at Fry's for $36.99. Must say it is a very enjoyable game for the most part.

In the third year of my dynasty and Notre Dame has back-to-back championships. Beat Iowa 38-21 for the first title and Auburn 21-17 in the second. Had to go through USC both seasons and handed them a 56-7 whoopin' (at ND) in year one and 21-14 loss (at USC) in year two.

Only have had one major scare, against Pitt in season one, where I won 24-21 on a field goal with under a minute left. I think I enjoy the end-of-season recruiting the best... again, fun game. Go out and pick it up.
