A&E TV Fighting Irish Trivia Contest!

University of Notre Dame: Fighting Irish DVD Collector's Set

This one-of-a-kind collection of classic Notre Dame Football games honors the unforgettable heroes who have burnished the shine of this great University. While the glorious victories in this collection are punctuated by stellar college football names--Montana, Holtz, Parseghian, Bettis, Devine, Browner, Ishmael, Holtz, Golic--it is the full team, the deep squads of student-athletes and overachievers, along with the student body and its ever-faithful fans, that assure that "Old Notre Dame will win over all."

The University of Notre Dame: Fighting Irish DVD Collector's Set includes the following games:
  • VOL. 1: 1977 "THE GREEN JERSEY GAME" vs. USC (49-19): When the Irish charged the field to meet the USC Trojans clad for the first time in green jerseys, tradition was turned aside. Add in a student-built Trojan Horse and four Joe Montana touchdowns, and a Notre Dame classic was born.
  • VOL 2: 1978 COTTON BOWL vs. TEXAS (38-10): Notre Dame's commanding performance behind Joe Montana, Jerome Heavens, and Vagas Ferguson propelled the team from number five in the polls to national champions after this impressive victory.
  • VOL 3: 1979 COTTON BOWL vs. HOUSTON (35-34): Joe Montana's legend was born as he rallied the Irish in below zero wind chill weather to one of college football's most memorable comebacks.
  • VOL 4: 1988 REGULAR SEASON GAME vs. MIAMI (31-30): Miami started the game with a 36-game regular season winning streak and a menacing defense. The Notre Dame defense ended the game by forcing seven turnovers, preventing a game-winning two-point play, and securing a stunning victory.
  • VOL 5: 1989 FIESTA BOWL vs. WEST VIRGINIA (34-21): Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz used the press to solidify the belief that the Irish had their hands full with the mighty West Virginia defense. But it was Notre Dame that supplied the winning defense while Irish quarterback Tony Rice went on to pass for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns.
  • VOL 6: 1992 "THE SNOW BOWL" vs. PENN STATE (17-16): In their last home game, three seniors led a brilliant Irish comeback in the swirling snow of Notre Dame Stadium. With 20 seconds on the clock, Rich Mirer's touchdown pass to Jerome Bettis set up the winning two-point conversion from Meir to Reggie Brooks.
  • VOL 7: 1993 REGULAR SEASON GAME vs. FLORIDA STATE (31-24): After #1 ranked Florida State scored early, the Irish then pounded the Seminoles vaunted defense for 239 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The stout Notre Dame defense held tight to preserve victory and end Florida State's 16-game winning streak.
  • VOL 8: BONUS: 1966 REGULAR SEASON GAME vs. MICHIGAN STATE (10-10) COMPLETE SECOND HALF: The #1 ranked Irish traveled to play the #2 ranked Michigan State Spartans in a game for the ages. Punctuated by a tactical decision by Notre Dame's Ara Parseghian, the game and his strategy remain much-discussed and deliberated as the teams played to a 10-10 stalemate.
Special DVD Features Include:
  • Vintage Highlight Film
  • Special Navigation by Quarter and Scoring Drive
  • Original Radio Calls for Key Plays featuring Video Play-Along Function
  • Interactive Sleeve Design Featuring Notre Dame Rosters, Trivia, Key Facts and Statistics
  • Interactive Menus
To find out more about this amazing eight disc DVD box set, be sure to check out the A&E TV Shop. First off, I want to thank Suzanne Dobson and A&E TV for providing IrishEnvy.com with the opportunity to run this awesome trivia contest. Without their sponsorship, we would not have been able to bring you another sweet IrishEnvy.com Contest! Rep to them!

Now, for what you guys (and gals) have been waiting for: You guys know the drill... For you rookies, here is how this works. I will ask a series of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football-related trivia questions. The individual with the most correct answers... will win the prize! In the case of a tie, I will then throw those names into my trusty Notre Dame helmet and my five year old son Nicolas will draw out a winner. It's that simple!

Questions

1) In 1991, Notre Dame had arguably it's best representation ever in the NFL draft. Name at least three players drafted (and the team that drafted them) and also name the Irish standout that spurned the NFL for more money to play in the Canadian Football League.

2) Notre Dame's first ever Bowl game (and victory) came in the 1925 Rose Bowl with a 27-10 victory over Stanford. During this game, this Irish legend scored a touchdown both offensively and defensively. Who was he?

3) What is the Notre Dame Stadium record for most points scored by the Irish? Additionally, who did they beat and what was the final score?

4) Joe Montana is most notably know in Notre Dame lore for leading the amazing comeback in the 1979 Cotton Bowl where he engineered a four play, 29 yard drive in the final 28 seconds to defeat Houston 35-34. On that touchdown pass from Montana, what Irish receiver caught the game winning score?

5) From 1946 to 1950, Notre Dame had an amazing 39 game unbeaten streak that included 37 victories and 2 ties. Who snapped that winning streak and what was the final score of that game?

6) On October 19th, 1924, these famous words were penned in the New York Herald-Tribune: "Outlined against a blue, gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. There are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden." Who said this?

7) Notre Dame has many fierce rivals. However, four of it's rivalry games feature an exchange of a trophy or other trinket to the victory. Please name those four opponents and the name of the trophy that is given to the winner of that respective game.

8) In Notre Dame's illustrious history, the Irish have been fortunate to have seven Heisman Trophy winners. Please name those seven individuals, what year they won the trophy and what position they played while at Notre Dame.

9) There is much argument and debate about how many National Championships Notre Dame has actually won. Please give the number of total titles won and how many were awarded by the Associated Press.

10) The mystique and allure of the Notre Dame green football jersey has long been a psychological ploy used by many coaches in order to inspire the Irish and intimidate the opponent. Which coach developed this tradition and explain how the "mystique of the green jersey" came about.

Prize: The winner will receive a brand spankin' new, hot off the presses copy of the University of Notre Dame: Fighting Irish DVD Collector's Set. This DVD box set retails for $89.99 and can be purchased exclusively in the A&E TV Shop.

Yeah, I'll be reviewing it sometime in the next week or so and hope to post a review of it on here for everyone. It's too bad I'm not eligible to win this bad boy!
