Personally I don't think agreeing or disagreeing with Bob is the issue. I think he crossed a line. If I wanted to get political commentary, I know what channels to watch.

If you are commenting on the story, fine, it's relevent to his job.
But keep your damn politics out of my football games.

Notable countries with gun control include Canada and the United Kingdom. Extrapolate 10x for population difference and Canada is still about 8000 gun related murders from the US, the UK? About 70.

You can believe in anything you want, the right to bear arms is huge. Note that in Canada, private citizens can own guns, but its heavily regulated. Statistics don't lie and I believe that someone will drudge up some statistic to prove my link wrong. Stats can be skewed in any way you see fit. And I am not commenting on how I feel because I know where this debate is headed.

As far as Bob Costas is concerned, he is paid for his opinion. If the networks didn't like it, he wouldn't be the figure head. He commented on a touchy subject at a relevant time.

I just thought he should have stuck to reporting on the story, I don't think it was the time or place to start talking about gun ownership. That's what surprised me the most.
