I do have a problem with Bob Costas pontificating at the "American public" like he's the authority on life. He's paid to be a sports commentator, his opinion on anything else is no more valuable than your local Starbucks barista. He's just another person and there are 300 million others just like him in this country... so I would prefer if he kept his sanctimonious opinions to himself and off nationwide television.
Btw, I can't be the only one that is bothered by simple jobs like coffee makers at Starbucks or the customer service desk at apple being given uppity names like' barista' or 'genius bar'... Dude, you make minimum wage, don't try to sound otherwise...

Im all for owning guns ( which i do) but i can see how people will want tighter gun control. I will say this though if you make gun control a larger issue people will just start to aquire guns illegally. Guns arent going away

Tragic, but he shot her 9 times. This wasn't an accident. Does anyone here think that she would still be alive if Belcher didn't have a gun on him? It could have just as easily been a knife or his hands.

I am a gun owner and have the opinion that most crimes committed with guns are not by someone that purchased it legally. The way that the government has proposed it's gun control is nothing more than an illusion of control. It is geared to more heavily regulate the people that responsibly own and purchase fire arms. If you want to see a decrease in crimes involving guns how about severe penalties for any crime committed with a gun, give the criminal something to consider before doing it. As it is now they serve a couple of years in prison if at all. Use the penalty as a deterrent. The idea of an assault rifle ban is another bad idea and a whole other discussion.

on the specific incident at hand...this is the ONE and ONLY defining issue. When you shoot someone 9 freakin times...you were out of your mind angry. Knife, lamp, bare hands, table, vase. He was going to kill her. The presence and "convenience" of a handgun...PLEASE!

and FWIW I agree w Buster which is why I don't belong to the NRA anymore..but this notion that more control over guns in general is in any way meaningful is dumb, but typical.

Anyway, so now we move forward to whitlock and then subsequently Costas. They took this tragedy and blurred what it was (who cares why)...

I believe there is something to be learned from this tragedy...something the NFL and all of us need to look at, as so aptly put by Brady Quinn. What happened to this guy? Something was going on! Why didn't someone know? Why couldn't he say? What triggered the domestic violence? Is there something NFL players, spouses, and family members need to work on here to recognize and to have a vehicle to intervene? This was domestic violence...was it brought on by head trama? something else? Point is, when taken for what it was, somebody can address it, and responsible press can help create an urgency to do something beneficial, but only if they stay on point...NOPE!

...what Costas failed to realize is he was contributing to the fog that causes paralysis and inaction. His words CAUSE the issues to linger not quite perceived correctly, uncomfortable, and ultimately pushed out of the fore of conscience...until it happens again. He hijacked this tragedy, used whitlocks mischaracterization, and doomed more vicitms becuase it is now a gun issue.

Bob Costas failed in an epic proportion and did more harm than good here...
