I know the best kicker in Louisville doesn't even play football in high school. He never did because he hated doing all the workouts since all he did was kick. He made a 59 yarder in 6th grade, which looked wild since they played on a 70 yard field. It looked like he was kicking from near his own end zone.

The truth of the matter is, most families would rather send their kids to a Catholic school if they can afford it because, often times, the education and support systems (even more important than education for kids who are from at-risk environments) are better there. That's just how it goes, but don't tell that to the public school honks. Ask Mike Floyd if his tuition was "paid-for" by boosters at Cretin-Durham. Both Mike and his mother made insane sacrifices so he could go to a school that would help him develop into the person he is today.

I was in the CHSL in Detroit. With the likes of Brother Rice, Catholic Central, U of D Jesuit, Orchard Lake St. Mary's and my school De La Salle. Brother Rice hasn't lost a lacrosse game in Michigan in 6 years or so. Yes they have great coaching, yes they are sponsored by Warrior. But a freshman on my varsity lacrosse team straight up told me Brother Rice recruited him to their school. We also have twin baseball players that have been on the varsity since their freshman year, they were recruited heavily by all schools possible. (Funny fact- their dad was on the Stanford team against Cal, when the band came on the field, still denies it to this day.) We have a running back who's tuition supposedly gets paid for, recruiting happens. Sometimes its just good athletes want better coaching and a better education, so they go to those schools, but others it is dirty. (Look at Orchard Lake's 2007 team, and where those players went, I don't believe any of them were at the school in the first place, and then when they went there all their tuition was paid for. One of those kids asked our football coach "What do I get if I come here?", it just shows you that high schools can be as dirty as colleges.)

Most of our athletes came from a Catholic grade school and most of them chose to go to a Catholic H.S., so my H.S. is a likely destination. I came from a public school system, but whatever sport I played in I was no stud, I was average for my powerhouse H.S.'s athletics. How do you define "H.S. recruiting"? I remember, I was in the 6th grade, got a packets of info from my future H.S., but back then, listening to my local, public H.S. coaches (Private H.S. is evil), I was going to throw it away. But my parents said give it a shot. I kept getting packets and invitations to open houses every once in awhile, but the weird thing was they sent me a couple birthday cards, Christmas cards and they even sent my mom a Mothers day card! Well it worked and I went to school there. |
