Actually playing on TNT as we speak...LOTR:The Two Towers is amazing. That's got to be up high on the list.

Heat is a great action movie, however when i think of what qualifies as the best I think more along the lines of a Die Hard 1, 2 or 3. If you added the total time in action sequences in Heat it would be maybe 30 minutes or so. Die hard is action beginning to end.

AMC has been showing Commando with Ah-nold Schwartzenneggar. I loved that movie as a kid, but watching it now just takes the excitement out of it. what was the other action movie with Arnold and the guy from the Best Damn Sports Show? that had some great action sequences.

That's part of the reason Heat is so good--it's not just shoot-'em-up, blow-'em-up without much of a good story, characters, or good acting. The action is contextualized within a compelling context. Personally, I don't like action movies that are just that:action. It becomes meaningless, and therefore, less compelling.

Michael Mann is one of the best directors out there.

Black Hawk Down is another kick ass movie by him, so put that up there as a great action movie,

The Insider is another fine movie by Mann.
Black Hawk Down was directed by the incredible Ridley Scott.

what the hell was I thinking about?

Thought for sure he did Black Hawk Down, chalk that up to a brain fart, but still a great action flick.

I'll throw a couple more of his out there for action flicks, Collateral and Last of the Mohicans

Speaking of Ridley Scott, his brother Tony directed one of my all-timers: The Last Boy Scout.
