NCAA to Restrict Text Messaging - Notre Dame Football Discussion

A popular way of communicating between college coaches and recruits may be restricted if the NCAA’s Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet has its way. The group will sponsor legislation that would restrict the use of text messaging and other forms of electronic communication in recruiting.

According to the NCAA’s website, the proposed legislation would limit text messaging and other “computer mediated communication” to between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The proposal also would not allow coaches to text and players prior to September 1 of the prospect’s junior year – in line with current communication standards.

As it stands currently, coaches may text a potential student-athlete at any time. The coaches, however, are restricted on the amount of phone calls they may make to a recruit as well as times of the year they may contact them in person and on the phone.

However, the proposed legislation would not restrict the use of e-mails between coaches and players.

According to the NCAA, the legislation is the first of what could be more restrictive steps in regulating computerized communication between coaches and high school athletes.

“Members consider the proposal a first step toward regulating an area of constantly expanding technology and its effect on the recruiting process, and further recommendations and legislation is expected,” the website said.

The whole recruiting rules, processes and the like need revamped. I really would like to see two national signing days.

Yeah the recruiting rules suck. But it would be smart to make a rule for texting players.
