If things keep up the way they have been, they'll have some wicked speed out of the 4-3 and nickel.

the thing that the 3-4 gives you is the confussion for the offense, they have to try and find out where the fourth person is coing to come from. If you line your defensive line up in the gaps it can be enough to clog the running lanes a high percentage of the time becuase the line has to worry about the unknown rusher before they can double. the other great theing it can do is apply a good amount of preasure on the QB which would in turn help out the DB's

I agree with this. But, unless we have a dominant Nose Tackle, I just can't see us pulling that off. ANd our DT recruiting has not brought in that type of player just yet.

I'm a big 3-4 fan at the pro-level but I'm not sure if it translates to college well. Not only do you need a big NT, but you need two big DE, and LB who can both tackle surely and cover well (elite pass rushing helps too but is not as important as the rush comes partially from the scheme). At the pro level, everyone is big, fast and at least somewhat skilled. Even an elite school can't really say that at the college level.

Ok, so everyone agrees a BIG dominant NT is required to run the 3-4 effectively, which we don't have.

So, I am asking the question What if we did Land someone like Austin this class, Would we then be able to make the switch?

I am old school and love the 4-3 so I hope we aren't converting to a 3-4...Minter is a guy that has lived and died with the 4-3 so I wouldn't think he would want to change now.

DT's

The linebackers are more athletic and will be able to cover people (Nagel, Paskorz, Wilson, etc).

Maybe they'll go to a 4-3 because no DT worth a rat's ass seems to want to come to Notre Dame to play football.
Jiggs:

Why do you think we are having such a hard time getting DT's? You would think that with Weis building an elite program again, and the recruits obviously seeing this, they would want to come and play for great coaches. I don't understand the reluctance to become Irish, unless the kid grew up a fan of a differnet team, etc. Any opinion?
