Can you imagine Bobby Bowden ever even consider leaving FSU for the NFL? How about Joe Paterno? Those guys love their jobs and the Universittes they work for. You would think that Weis would love his alma mater too and not be out interviewing for other jobs.

I certainly couldn't milk my alma mater. I'd honor my contractual working relationship with my alma mater if I had one. Maybe that's just me. maybe it's all about rhe money nowadays.

Bowden and Paterno are a hundred years old. If the NFL had come knocking a few decades ago, I bet they would've listened.

The thing is, Weis DID "honor his contract". If these rumors are true, then I imagine the Saints probably called him - or his agent, or whatever - and perhaps made a ballpark offer. (I strongly doubt he "interviewed" in any meaningful sense.) He'd been in the NFL for a long time before coming to ND and so it was naturally tempting, but he wanted to stay at his alma mater and so he let them know what was going on to see how they'd react. They extended his contract and gave him some more money. What's so criminal about that?

I wanted to put it in a little more clear context. Pretend you are Charlie Wes. You've been passed over NFL jobs for years. Your alma mater comes calling. They give you a 7 figure salary and a six figure deal. Thsi pretty much secures your financial future. You ink the deal and tell everyone that you want to be at ND and want to return your alma mater to glory.

Enter the Saints. They offer much more money, but after you already made a commitment to your alma mater. If you are Weis you can:

1. Tell the Saints thanks but no thanks. ND made a commitment to me when nobody else would and I made one to them.

2. You can take the money and send your alma mater packing or

3. You can have it all. You can use the Saints deal to secure an even better deal from your alma mater, knowing that they are desparate and will probably give you whatever you want.

You don't find one of these decision more honorable than the other? You don't find one of these decisions to be selfish?

The NFL did come calling for Paterno years ago and he turned them down.

Sure, I guess that (1) would be more "honorable" than (3). But that doesn't mean he's a jerk for asking for more money, even if that was "selfish" in some sense (but who isn't?).

IMO, opting out of a CFB contract to go to the NFL would have been entirely understandable, since it's in no way a lateral move. But hey - he stayed. He was richly rewarded for it, but he stayed. He took a job that very few people wanted, and parlayed his early successes into a big, fat contract extension. What's the big deal???
