The ND press release below covers Casper's accomplishments in the classroom, on the college and NFL gridirons, and in life. In his senior year in the 1973, Undefeated, National Championship Season ND beat Alabama 24-23 in the Sugar Bowl, in one of the most exciting college football games every played. Everybody knows Clements sealed the win with a 35 yard pass to TE backup Robin Weber. Few recall that of Clements 7 completions in that game 4 were to TEs, the one to Weber for 35 yards and 3 to Casper for 75 yards. But Casper's play of the game was on a running play. With Bama up 17-14 in the 3Q, Mahalic returned a Bama fumble to their 12. On the next play Pennick ran left, Casper demolished the Tide DE, a future Tide Head Coach named Mike Dubose, then blew up a Safety near the goal line allowing Pennick to score. Two pancakes on the same play.

And yes, depsite being beat by ND in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Eve 1973, Alabama counts '73 as one of their National Championships.

Consensus All-American, co-captain on Notre Dame's 1973 national championship team to be inducted in December.

*Notre Dame Press Release
*

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Former University of Notre Dame football All-American David Casper today has been named to the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame.

The 1973 consensus All-American is one of 14 former college players and three coaches named to the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class. The '12 class will be inducted at the 55th annual awards dinner on Dec. 4, 2012, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The players and coaches will be enshrined in the summer of 2013.

Casper becomes the 44th former Notre Dame player inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The Irish have six former coaches in the hall and the 50 total enshrines are the most of any NCAA institution, the most recent being Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown in 2009.

Born in Bemidji, Minn., Casper played his first three years of high school football at St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin, Ill., and his senior campaign at Chilton High School in Chilton, Wis. His Chilton team in 1969 outscored its opponents 363-0.

The 6-3, 243-pound Irish tight end served as co-captain of the 1973 Notre Dame team that finished 11-0 and won the national title on a consensus basis after a 24-23 victory over top-rated and unbeaten Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. He caught three passes for 75 yards in that contest.

Casper played his first two seasons at offensive left tackle in 1971 and '72 (he started final four games as a sophomore, then won honorable mention All-America honors in 1972 from Associated Press), then switched to tight end as a senior. Former Irish coach Ara Parseghian called Casper the best athlete he ever coached.

Casper finished with 21 career catches for 335 yards and four touchdowns, with all but two of those receptions coming in his senior campaign in '73. He was a participant in the 1974 College All-Star Game and the Hula Bowl. Selected Notre Dame's offensive MVP in '73, he also played earlier in his Notre Dame career as a linebacker, defensive tackle and split end.

Excuse me if I put this in the wrong place. But in searching through my old baseball cards, I found several ND player cards. I never remember college players on cards, so I dont know if they are rare. I have sever Rocket Ismail cards saying 1990 Walter Camp Player of the Year, a Chris Zorich Lombardi Award winning card, and a Tim Brown Heisman Hero card. They are all in excellent shape because they have been in a glass case for the last 20+ years. If anyone is interested, PM me and I will send pics. Thanks

Purdue and oversigning??

so according to oversigning.com, Purdue took an average of 24.22 players a year from '02-'10. That would have them signing more players than Vandy, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee. Minnesota would also be in this boat, and Michigan State comes in tied with Tennesee at 24.0 anually.

I thought the B1G had hard and fast oversinging rules, and apart from Vandy, it crushes my soul a little bit as a Wisco boy to think that a fine-upstanding institution like Minnesota would take more players than Florida!

Have I been led astray by the oversigning hype, is Purdue hemorrhaging players because of academic/behavior/it sucks to play at Purdue reasons, did Urban Meyer vanish players into a black hole... What shennanigans is going on here??

After Parseghian’s Northwestern team finished 0-9 in 1957, the fiery young head coach was on the hot seat. He had just completed the second season of a three-year contract, so the clock was ticking.

With his career as a head coach on the line, Parseghian analyzed every detail of the program, from the equipment the players were wearing to off-season habits. During one film study, he studied the different length of plays in time duration. The longest play was usually a kickoff return, about 12 seconds, and the shortest were less than two seconds, a no-gain dive into the line.

On average, an offense will run about 70 to 80 plays per game, as will the defense. On average, each play worked out to about four seconds. So if you multiply four seconds by 70 to 80 plays, it translated into 280 to 320 seconds, or about *5 minutes of live, active, playing time*.

Yes, talent was essential. No one could win without it. But the edge in a program, or a leg up on others, came from the three Es: Effort, Execution and Endurance.

I believe you got to go with Golson...
Keil will end up transferring after next year...
Once Golson plays he will not beable to come off the field
I think Keil is going to be real good buti just feel Golson fits our system better. If Golson starts he will be there for the next 4 years. We another mobile Qb is comin in next year ...you red shirt him and once Golson graduates he will have two years left, sets us up for the next 6 yeara

Wood cracks Heisman list

From ESPN Matt Fortuna Wood cracks Heisman Pundit watch list - Notre Dame Football Blog - ESPN (http://espn.go.com/blog/notre-dame-football/post/_/id/6373/wood-cracks-heisman-pundit-watch-list)

---Quote---
We expressed our surprise in this space a month ago when Cierre Wood was pegged a Heisman darkhorse by the Heisman Pundit. But it appears Wood may be a little more than a darkhorse with the spring season wrapped up.

The Heisman Pundit released its first 18-man watch list for the award Wednesday, and Wood makes the cut. He will face three others from the watch list this coming season, as USC's Matt Barkley, Oklahoma's Landry Jones and Michigan's Denard Robinson all appear on the list, too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Wood was largely overshadowed last year because of senior Jonas Gray's feel-good breakout campaign. The fact Notre Dame returns a running back who notched 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior cannot be overlooked, especially with most of the offensive line returning.

But strong springs from Theo Riddick and George Atkinson III have left me more convinced than I was a month ago that Wood simply won't get the touches needed to be in the conversation throughout the season. Nonetheless, the expectations are high for the senior entering 2012, and the backfield depth should only help his play, regardless of whether or not he gets any hardware for it.
---End Quote---
Doubt he will even be invited to the banquet, but good to see he is getting some recognition. If we go 12-0 (highly unlikely), then he may have a good shot if he is healthy for all 12 games. Do you guys think he set to have a big year?
