Part 2 – DIRECTED ELECTIVES – 5 Credits
Any combination of the following classes:
WORLD LANGUAGES French, German, Japanese, Latin, or Spanish
*Only World Languages taken during grades 9 – 12 will fulfill the Directed Elective Core 40 Requirement.
FINE ARTS Art, Music, Dance, or Drama
CAREER/TECHNICAL Business, Family & Consumer Science, Technology Ed.,
or Technical /Career
Or in other words you can take art, music and dance to fulfil your 5 credits avoiding foreign language all together.
The honors diploma requires 2 years of foreign language (fulfilling ND's admission requirement). However, this is the minimum diploma earned in Indiana.

That would be from grade 7 to 11.
Spanish is an option, which a lot of people take.
You also have to do a math class every year. Some are harder than others.
Basically you fulfill all the basic requirements for American Universities by grade 11.
You have to go to Cegep(pre-university) for 2 years to have the AP+ curriculum, which is required for Quebec Universities. Cegep is not our best invention I would say.
I like your system better, personally, but it baffles me sometimes how these kids don't have basic curriculum. There might not be enough basic mandatory classes for graduation.

We really suck at teaching foreign languages in the States though. And since we suck at it, it doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense to make the students take it, when they aren't going to learn anything anyway.
A joke I once heard (reps to anyone who can name the comedian):
"English and Americans say, 'Two languages in one head ... no one can LIVE at that speed!'
And Europe says, 'But the Dutch speak four languages ... and smoke marijuana ....' "

It does not make sense to me either how kids are not having to take a foreign language. Here in New Mexico kids start Spanish as a foreign language as early as kindergarten (or for those ESL students, English). There is no way to avoid that in elementary school much less middle or high school. Even 25 years ago when I was in high school I had Spanish every single year. I ended up testing out of Spanish as a Freshmen at ND. Not requiring some kind of foreign language is yet another huge disservice to kids in our school system.
