It's really not that hard to think about, if u don't show up ready have it pounded at you play after play, your not gonna beat Stanford. It was Harbaugh's style at Stanford and with the 49ers and Shaw looks like he is gonna continue it. It's common football talk to say I u have to be tougher than the other team, did u watch the winter workout video? All about being mentally tough

Yea i am thinking there will be a fairly decent drop off at Stanford this year. That is a hell of alot of talent to lose in one year.

Offensively they should struggle. They lose 2 great OLs, Owusu, and Fleener in addition to Luck. They have two highly touted QBs that could step in for Luck... but they won't play at his #1 draft pick level in their first year. It's funny that in the 2009-2011 classes Stanford signed 7 QBs. They signed 3 QBs in 2010 alone + 2 in each of 2009 and 2011. That's insane. And to me it means they weren't very confident in who they had on the team after Luck. Although Josh Nunes and Brett Nottingham had solid accolades coming out of HS.

Defensively they could be great next year. They should have elite LBs and some solid DBs. And that alone might be good enough to get 9 wins against their joke of a schedule.

They may lose 2 really good OL, but they've recruited well at that position the past few years, especially this last year. Granted, they will be Frosh this year, but in last years game against Southern Cal, Cywnar got manhandled by a true Frosh, so that doesn't mean squat to me.

Besides your one anecdote about Cwynar (an undersized and physically limited DT) getting handled by a true frosh from USC (which I also don't even remember specifically because our entire DL got handled that game so it's all a big blur of sadness to me... what was his name?) it is commonly accepted that you practically never ever want to start a true frosh OL... or if you have to, you're in for some serious growing pains.

With that being said, they could easily start guys they've had on campus awhile. But even then I find it highly unlikely that two fresh starters play at a 1st round NFL draft pick level. No matter what way you try to slice it you can't say Stanford losing 4 1st round NFL players on offense isn't going to take a big step back. Even if all of the new players play at a high level above what is expected they'll still be worse than last year.
