| Waterboy | He theoretically could serve his mission after his playing days, you can go up until you are 26 but that doesn't happen very often as most people who can afford to go when they are 19 go then. The problem is if he gets drafted following college. If he really is set on serving a mission and he gets drafted, there is no way an NFL team would let him put it off and he would be forced to choose between a (probable) lifelong dream to play in the NFL and a (probable) life long dream of serving a mission. If he goes either before or during college he can come back and still play in college and get drafted after the fact. My little brother is facing this as he is likely to be drafted in the first 5 rounds of the MLB draft this summer. He decided to accept a scholarship to BYU because they would work around his mission. I know that if Charlie is willing to work with him on this it would be a huge selling point. |

| Varsity Club Member | Hey baceprost- excellent post- thanks for the inside info. Being out here in Boise area I have been able to see alot more coverage of the local guys making this same decision- whether to take the mission now, after 1 year of college, or afterwards. More of the area (read NW schools) have more experience working thru all of the ramifications of athletes coming and going, none more than BYU, Utah, Utah State and ISU. As some of these larger schools compete for the elite players that also happen to be mormon they need to look at how these schools have dealt with the guy going away for 2 years. It does pose certain challenges - like depth chart position-and scholarship numbers and what kind of commitment is made by both student and team/coach. Hope Te'o is being able to convey his wishes and the ND staff can come up with a plan to work for him, if indeed he wants to go on a mission. |
