which should tell Manti something about Pete Caroll. If Caroll changed his position on taking missions during college, which as you say he was "adamant" about, because Manti said it would be a deal breaker, then Manti should see that Pete has no principles and is willing to do and say anything to get a recruit.

If there was a legitimate reason to not letting Havili go on his mission, then the same should hold true for Manti. Don't be surprised if Manti is discouraged from going on his mission if he ended up at USC.

Manti was ecstatic when Pete told him he'd be allowed to serve his mission, so wishful thinking on your part

You need to read what I said. There's no wishful thinking on my part, as I didn't say anythig that I hope comes true.

I said it wouldn't surprise if after Manti chose USC (meaning after he signs) that he would be discouraged from going on the mission.

I believe the only reason why Pete would all of a sudden change the "no mission" policy he's held since he's been at USC has everything to do with what kind of a player Manti is, and not some soft spot in Pete's heart.

If Manti chooses USC, I hope he is still able to go on his mission if he wants it. But it would not surprise me if he had pressure against it from USC after he signed there.

Of course they'll probably try and get him to stay, coaches are in the business of winning games, not trying to please the LDS church.

it's not about pleasing the LDS church, it's about being honest with recruits.

your statment proves my point that Pete has no principles and will say and do whatever to get a recruit, even if it means completely flip flopping on a long standing policy. so why should Manti believe that Pete will keep his word and keep a scholarship for him if Manti takes his mission?

wouldn't make me feel comfortable if it was me.
