Tough Tests

By Allen Wallace
National Recruiting Editor
Posted Aug 22, 2007

The only school in Michael Floyd's top five that he hasn't already visited is Florida. "They are a great team, but they have a tough schedule in the SEC and it'll be tough for them to repeat this year," Floyd said. "It'll be a tough test for them." Another tough test that Floyd is looking forward to is the Ohio State/Michigan game. "I think they'll both do really well this season..."

Michael Floyd, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound five-star wide receiver from Cretin Derham High School in St. Paul, Minn., will be taking his official visit to Notre Dame for the USC game on October 20. Floyd has 22 scholarship offers, continues to deny a leader, but says the Irish are recruiting him the hardest.
"It's a cool place and the people are great," said Floyd, ranked by Scout.com as the nation's No. 7 wide-out and No. 5 in the Midwest overall. "I really got along well with them and had a fun time at the camp this summer. I just found everyone easy to be around. They are a winning team and every year their goal is to win the national championship."

While Floyd denies a favorite, he says his leaders are Minnesota, Notre Dame, Florida, Ohio State and Michigan. All of his favorites have offered. "I just want to find a place where I'm the most comfortable and where I fit in," Floyd said.

The Gophers are only 15 minutes away from Floyd's house, but he insists distance isn't a factor. "The new coaches at Minnesota are very intense," he said. "I love the excitement they've brought and all the players are really pumped up for the season."

Another tough test that Floyd is looking forward to is the Ohio State/Michigan game. "I think they'll both do really well this season," Floyd said, being as politically correct as possible. "Michigan is bringing back a lot of their offense - so it should be a great game.

"Ohio State is always tough and they've got a great recruiting class this year," he said. "Also, I already know a few guys there and I have a great relationship with their strength coach. They run a good system."

Another coach that Floyd has developed a good relationship with is Michigan's wide receiver coach, Erik Campbell. "I know they produce great wide receivers and I really like coach Campbell," Floyd said. "They have new facilities and their weight room is amazing."

Floyd denies any timetable for making his decision.

Cretin Derham plays their first game on Aug. 31 against Forest Lake.

He reports a 3.2 core GPA and took the SAT in June, but says he hasn't gotten his results yet. "I've got to get them from my school," he said

I can't blame a kid for wanting to wait and weigh all of his options to find the absolute best place for him...but damn, for my own well being I wish he would pull the trigger and choose ND already.

I can't help but wonder if he wants to wait and see how Minn starts out with the new coaches and all to make his final decision, because ultimately I can't imagine that the decision involves anyone other than Minn and ND. Therefore, lets all hope that Minn gets off to a horrible start and Floyd realizes that its worth leaving home for a soon to be national champion.

First, there are no silent verbals to ND anymore, and personnaly, I like that. Second, he will be deciding after the football season. Unless I start seeing pictures of him in a speedo and hearing stories about him working on his front side 3 1/2, I'm not going to worry or get a "weird feeling".

Sorry, I got nothin' for you on the "mullet and tuxedo" front. But there ARE still silent verbals at ND, just not SOFT ones. The policy is "If you're LOOKING, we're looking" not "If you don't ANNOUNCE it, we're looking". The problem with Trattou and the Littles had nothing to do with silence, but with continuing to shop around after they'd "committed".
