Three's a charm for DeSoto football

Florida move-in gives team more star power in area's top 100
02:29 AM CDT on Sunday, August 26, 2007

By TODD WILLS / The Dallas Morning News
twills@dallasnews.com

Adrian Bushell, one of Texas' top players, said he feels right at home with the DeSoto football team since transferring from Florida.

He has a new teammate, quarterback Cyrus Gray, a projected college running back who is ranked No. 6 on SportsDay's Area Top 100.

There's defensive end Tony Jerod, the area's No. 12 ranked player who has orally committed to Texas A&M.

And Bushell, who is No. 8 on SportsDay's list after arriving in Texas from Pace High School in Miami, gives DeSoto three players among the top dozen area recruits.

"It just feels nice to have players around you that are just as good as you or even better than you," said Bushell, who will play running back, receiver and cornerback for his new team. "Like me and Cyrus, we really push each other."

Gray (6-0, 188), one of the area's fastest and most electric players, said he feels a kinship with Bushell (5-11, 180).

"He's a good person, and he's really fast," Gray said.

Gray and Bushell also have something else in common – neither has made an oral commitment to a college. Gray said Friday he will take his time and that he might take things down to the wire like rival William Cole at Cedar Hill last year.

Bushell has had offers from Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, but also isn't close to a commitment.

Jerod (6-3, 249) made his commitment to the Aggies in February, less than two weeks after national signing day. The decision didn't surprise his teammates.

"Tony was real comfortable with A&M," Gray said.

Jerod said he felt as comfortable in College Station as he does knowing he doesn't have to prepare to play against Gray and Bushell.

"I'm just happy I'm on their team," Jerod said. "I don't have to go against them with their speed and their ability.

"We've got good chemistry. Even though Adrian is new to our team, we have good chemistry."

DeSoto's Cyrus Gray is still undecided on which college he plans to attend.

Cyrus recently talked to Rob Ianello and they set up an official visit for Cyrus to come see ND. He will be traveling to ND for the Navy game where he'll be joining Deion Walker on his first official vist. Cyrus is also planning on making official visits to Louisville, California and Florida later this year.

So far this season Cyrus has helped lead his team to a 3-1 record while rushing for over 700 yds, and 9 TDs while playing QB.

Cool. That's really good to hear. Either Gray or Williams would make a GREAT addition to this already excellent class.

I like the way he starts off ("Notre Dame is just a school that sticks out right now ... It's a big name school and they've got a great alumni base."), but then he has so many good things to say about EVERYONE on his "top eleven".

We'll see, I suppose ...

He gives me the impresion that he is a kid with a great heart. It's a shame that he supposedly has struggled with grades... but it says he has a 3.2 gpa so I can't understand the issue unless he is looking for early enrollment or doesn't have enough core classes.
